New Zealand

New Zealand’s build-up to this series, which sees all three games at Mount Maunganuit’s Bay Oval, has been dominated by absentees. Michael Bracewell steps in as skipper for the sidelined Mitchell Santner, while key players Kane Williamson, Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson and Glenn Phillips are also unavailable. There is some good news on the bowling front, with Kyle Jamieson and Ben Sears back in the fold.

Recent T20 results have been excellent, with a flawless 4/4 record in July’s tri-series against South Africa and Zimbabwe following up home series wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The head-to-head record against Australia is mixed; they lost the last home series in 2024 3-0, but beat their old rivals in the 2022 World Cup and won the prior home series 3-2.

Tim Seifert was a standout with the bat in Zimbabwe, producing consistent contributions, including a match-winning 75 against the hosts. With the ball, experienced campaigner Matt Henry was instrumental throughout, claiming crucial wickets including a game-changing 2/19 in the final, earning him Player of the Series honours.

Australia

Australia come into the series with serious momentum, with 14 wins in their last 16 T20 internationals, including a hard-fought victory over South Africa at home and a 5-0 sweep in the Caribbean.

Their squad is more settled than New Zealand’s, although Josh Inglis has joined Pat Cummins, Nathan Ellis and Cameron Green on the sidelines with a calf strain that has ruled him out of the series. He is replaced by Alex Carey.

Marcus Stoinis’s recall adds yet more striking power to their middle order, where Tim David has been in explosive form, top scoring in the South Africa series, including an unbeaten 94.  With the ball, Adam Zampa remains Australia’s talisman in the shortest format and has been a thorn in New Zealand’s side, with 12 T20 wickets against them.

Pitch & conditions

Bay Oval isn’t a high-scoring venue - with the average first-innings score in T20 internationals at just over 150 - but it tends to offer balance for both bat and ball. There is often enough assistance for pacers early on, while the shorter square boundaries encourage hitters to take calculated risks.

There is a clear toss bias; of the 14 matches that have produced a result, 11 have been won by the team batting first. The forecast for Wednesday is dry, with temperatures reaching a high of 18c.

Key odds

Given their recent form and New Zealand’s weakened squad, it’s no surprise that Australia have been chalked up as 4/9 favourites for this one, with the Kiwis rated a 7/4 chance.

Devon Conway heads the market for top New Zealand batter at 3/1, with the in-form Seifert at 10/3 and the classy Rachin Ravindra a 4/1 shot. For the Aussies, Travis Head is favourite at 11/4, with Mitch Marsh at 14/5 and David rated a 4/1 chance.

Henry and Jacob Duffy share favouritism to take most wickets for the Kiwis, at 11/4, with Josh Hazelwood (11/4) and Zampa (10/3) topping the market for the visitors.

Best Bets:

The heavy toss bias might give the hosts a fighting chance if they bat first, but match winner is not a market we’ll be getting involved with. Instead, we’ll go with the form horses with the bat and back Seifert to top score for New Zealand at 10/3 and David to hit the most runs for Australia at 4/1.

Seifert has been in exceptional form this year, scoring 445 runs from 10 innings at an average above 55 and a strike rate of 170, while David has scored 215 in six innings, at an average of nearly 54 and a SR of 183.
