Spain vs Austria Prediction: Spain to win low-scoring R32 match

The Spanish have eased their way into the 2026 World Cup but are looking like they might be on a collision course with France for what would be an epic semi-final. Plenty to do before then however and that starts with their Round of 32 match this evening with Austria (8PM, BBC1).

Austria provide the next test for Spain, who are hoping to end a 16-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Since their glorious trip to South Africa in 2010, this competition has only brought misery for La Roja. A group-stage exit in Brazil was followed by round-of-16 penalty shootout defeats against Russia in 2018 and Morocco in 2022.
A round-of-32 tie against Austria in this expanded World Cup should in theory bring that wait to an end. Spain showed flashes of their potential in a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the group stage, but otherwise they've looked relatively unconvincing so far at this tournament.
They kicked off their campaign with a surprise stalemate against Cape Verde, while it took a goalkeeping error from Uruguay's Fernando Muslera to seal a 1-0 victory in their final group match. Luis de la Fuente's side only managed six attempts in that game, with their performance suggesting they are currently a long way off the standard being set by tournament favourites France.
With Nico Williams suffering a fresh injury blow, Spain's hopes of winning this World Cup largely rest on the young shoulders of Lamine Yamal. He is yet to complete 90 minutes at this tournament. The Barcelona winger struggled to have much impact against Uruguay, but did look lively in the first half against Saudi Arabia, before being replaced at the break.
Austria may consider switching to three centre-backs in a bid to stifle Spain. Bayern Munich's Konrad Laimer could be deployed on the left flank with the task of stopping Yamal, likely with a bit of help from captain David Alaba.
Ralf Rangnick's team beat Jordan 3-1 in their opening game, with veteran forward Marko Arnautović coming off the bench to round off the victory with a late penalty. They followed that up with a 2-0 defeat against a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina.
That set up a final fixture against Algeria, where both sides knew a point apiece would seal progress. The match did end in a draw, but only after the most dramatic of finales.
Amidst pre-game talk of two teams who might engineer a draw, Riyad Mahrez apparently hadn't read the script as he scored his second goal of the match to fire Algeria in front in the 93rd minute. Austria were out of the World Cup at that point, but they found late salvation as their giant striker Saša Kalajdžić came off the bench to head home to make it 3-3 in the 96th minute.
Despite finishing above Algeria, Austria's reward was a tougher knockout path. They may need to beat both Spain and Portugal to reach their first World Cup quarter-final since 1954. That clearly won't be easy, but Das Team will be hoping to make life as difficult as possible for the reigning European champions in Los Angeles.
Team News:
Aside from Williams, Spain are also missing Yéremi Pino to injury. With Víctor Muñoz lacking match fitness and Yamal also only recently returning from a hamstring issue, a lack of wide options has the potential to be La Roja's Achilles heel at this World Cup.
Álex Baena has been used off the left flank in the past two games, and he should continue in that role. Dani Olmo could return in place of Mikel Merino, while Marcos Llorente and Pedro Porro are involved in a close fight for the starting role at right-back.
Austria's plans for this World Cup were dealt a big blow when midfielder Christoph Baumgartner was forced to withdraw from their initial squad. He was set to play a major role, but they've not been hit by any significant selection issues since then.
Rangnick used a 4-2-3-1 system in the group stage. His general philosophy involves pressing high up the pitch, but the ex-Manchester United boss may consider some tactical tweaks against a Spain side that tends to find it tougher against teams that drop deep.

Bet 1 - Spain to win & Under 3.5 goals @ 21/20
It has been a solid but certainly not spectacular start to this tournament from Spain. They've looked more like the side that limped out of recent World Cups than the one that swept all aside on the road to glory at Euro 2024.
Yamal may need another game or two before he really hits top gear, and with Williams unavailable, it's hard to see La Roja blowing Austria away.
However, they should still comfortably win the battle for supremacy in midfield, while De la Fuente will be encouraged by his team's ability to keep clean sheets in all of their group games. Given that, I'm backing Spain to win and Under 3.5 goals at 21/20

Bet 2 - First goalscorer - Mikel Oyarzabal @ 3/1
Spain's style has evolved slightly since Euro 2024. While Álvaro Morata did a good job for the team, he was never the most clinical of strikers. With Mikel Oyarzabal now tasked with leading the line, they have a better finisher and someone capable of operating in tight spaces in and around the penalty area.
Much of La Roja's attacking play now centres around creating opportunities for the Real Sociedad man. He's already had 11 shots in 212 minutes on the pitch at this World Cup, which is comfortably the most in the Spanish squad.
Oyarzabal also has a knack for scoring early goals. His last five international goals have all come in the first half, while he has opened the scoring on four occasions for Spain since the start of the 2025/26 season. I'm backing the 29-year-old to score first at odds of 3/1.

Spain vs Austria Score Prediction
- Spain 2-0 Austria
Austria only managed to create one big chance and 0.53 xG in their 2-0 defeat to Argentina in the group stage. They don't look to have enough defensively to hold Spain off for a full 90 minutes, while it'll be difficult for them to wrestle the ball off the likes of Rodri and Pedri in midfield.
That suggests Spain's superior quality should ultimately show. The European champions will be happy to just get over the line and finally win a World Cup knockout game for the first time since 2010, but they will need to improve if they want to win the competition.
