Brazil vs Japan Bet Builder Tips: Selecao star holds all the cards in Texas

Brazil's reward for topping Group C at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is a tricky-looking round-of-32 tie with Japan, who went unbeaten in Group F to finish as runners-up. The Samurai Blue beat the Selecao 3-2 in a friendly last October, so I'm expecting a competitive contest between the two at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas on Monday (12pm local, 6pm BST).

Below are my Brazil vs Japan Bet Builder Tips, featuring a Real Madrid star and a departing Manchester United man...

Player 2+ Shots on Target (Sub Switch) - Vinicius Jr. (BRA)

Vinicius Jr. has been the star of the show so far for Brazil in North America, scoring in all three of their group games against Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, with his brace against the latter taking his tournament tally to four goals; only Argentina's Lionel Messi (five) has struck more times.

The 25-year-old has registered eight shots on target at the 2026 World Cup, with only France's Kylian Mbappe (nine) recording more. Vinicius Jr. scored with his only effort of the game against Morocco, scored and forced a save from his three shots against Haiti, and hit the target with five of his eight attempts against Scotland, netting twice.

Japan conceded six shots on target to the Netherlands and five to Sweden; one of the Oranje's forwards, Donyell Malen, registered a couple of shots on target, while a couple of the Blagult's attackers, Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga, also hit the target twice apiece, so Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. is certainly capable of doing so, too.

Betfred's Sub Switch rolls your bet to the oncoming substitute, so you stay in the game, even when your player doesn’t.

Player 1+ Shots (Sub Switch) - Yukinari Sugawara (JPN)

Japan wing back Yukinari Sugawara was only a second-half substitute against both the Netherlands and Tunisia, coming on in the 75th and 74th minute, respectively, but he still managed to shoot once against the former, forcing Bart Verbruggen into a save, while in his only start of the competition, the 1-1 draw with Sweden last time out, he again registered a shot on target with an effort saved by Jacob Zetterstrom.

The 25-year-old looks a good bet to at least record a shot again, if not a shot on target, even against the might of Brazil.

Sugawara averaged a shot per game for Werder Bremen in last season's Bundesliga, trying his luck five times in one game against runaway champions Bayern Munich, so he's not afraid to shoot when elite sides are in front of him.

Brazil vs Japan Odds

Player 1+ Shots (Sub Switch) - Gabriel Magalhaes (BRA)

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes proved a menace to opposition back lines in 2025/26, scoring four goals in 51 appearances for the Gunners and averaging 0.8 and 0.7 shots per game, respectively, in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

The 28-year-old averaged 0.5 shots per game in World Cup qualifying for Brazil and was tipped to pose big problems from set-pieces for Carlo Ancelotti's charges at the World Cup.

Gabriel failed to record a single shot against either Morocco or Haiti, but he registered his first attempt of the tournament in the 3-0 victory over Scotland last time out and should back himself to get on the end of at least one delivery into the box against Japan.

The Samurai Blue conceded two shots to Sweden centre back Gustaf Lagerbielke last time out while Dutch defenders Micky van de Ven, Jan Paul van Hecke and Virgil van Dijk all tried their luck once in a 2-2 draw with Hajime Moriyasu's side; the latter scored with his effort.

Player 2+ Fouls (Sub Switch) - Casemiro (BRA)

Brazil midfielder Casemiro endured a difficult first half against Morocco, receiving a yellow card for his only foul of the game in the 37th minute before being hooked at half-time for Fabinho, who went on to commit three fouls himself.

Casemiro started the Selecao's next two games against Haiti and Scotland, making two fouls against the former and one against the latter, but he managed to avoid another booking which would've brought about a one-match ban. However, Fabinho, who came on for him in the 65th minute against Scotland, collected his first yellow of the tournament for a foul on Kenny McLean.

So, with Sub Switch, backing Casemiro to commit 2+ fouls has been a winning selection in all three of Brazil's games so far, and I'm backing that trend to continue against Japan.
