For the past two years, I’ve been running the 3-3-3 column.

Here were the rules regarding how it worked.

3 - The number of different selections making up the acca.

3 - The number of different (non-English) European Leagues the selections are taken from every week.

3 - The minimum odds (3/1) or 4.0 if you prefer, that the acca will come to it every week.

And these were the column’s results over the past two years, so pretty impressive stuff.

  • 2025-26 season Current P and L: +16.5 pts
  • 2024-25 season’s P and L: + 16.9
  • World Cup P and L: +0.83

There will be a special edition of the 3-3-3 column during the Group Stages of the World Cup and possibly beyond. Of course, there won’t be matches picked from three different leagues this time round as they’re all from the same competition, but there will be picks from three different matches, and they’ll always come to at least 3/1 across the acca. So we’re keeping things as close as possible to the classic 3-3-3 format.

RECAP: As we know, Friday night’s selections were redundant because we’d already lost on the first selection of the day on Friday morning, but we got off to a good start with Saturday’s after getting the three cards we needed in Haiti v Brazil, where there were four.

So let’s see how we get on there and while we do, here are our picks for Sunday.

  • Tunisia v Japan
  • Sunday, 21 June, 05.00
  • Back Japan to win @ 8/15

A nice and simple one to get us underway.

Tunisia suffered a big 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their first match, but to be fair to them, they actually had more possession in that one, so perhaps they weren’t nearly as bad as the scoreline suggests.

But in the process, they sacked manager Sabri Lamouchi and brought in the highly experienced Herve Renard to try to save their campaign. He knows African football like few but a few days of training with a side he doesn’t know personally is unlikely to be enough preparation time ahead of a World Cup. Especially when you’re up against Japan.

They were good in the 2-2 draw with the Netherlands despite leaving it late to equalise and come to this tournament in good shape on the back of six wins, including beating England and Scotland away, also getting the better of Brazil in October.

Japan know perfectly well this is the game they simply have to win in a tight group and should get the job done against a Tunisia side who have now conceded five goals in back-to-back matches, having lost 5-0 to Belgium a couple of weeks ago.

  • Spain v Saudi Arabia
  • Sunday, 21 June, 17.00
  • Back Spain to win and under 4.5 goals @ 4/9

Spain’s draw against Cape Verde was one of the big shocks of the first round of matches but another slip-up is unlikely here.

Spain came into this tournament as one of the favourites and rightly so on the back of such a strong qualifying campaign.

Obvious as it sounds, the priority here is the win and given they’ll fancy themselves to beat Uruguay next, there’s no real need to go for the jugular and try to rack up a handful of goals.

A Saudi Arabia goal is somewhat unlikely against a Spain side who conceded just four in their last 10 and I think it’s a bit much to think Spain will win this 5-0; only once in their last 10 have they scored five or more in a game, so this selection covers plenty of possible scores.

  • Belgium v Iran
  • Sunday, 21 June, 20:00
  • Back Belgium to win to nil @ 23/20

Belgium were pretty poor in that first match and will have to seriously improve if they’re to make the next round, let alone make the quarters.

But then again, it’s not the first time they’ve started a tournament slowly before getting better.

They’d been in decent form before tat draw with 5-0 and 2-0 wins over Tunisia and Croatia just before the World Cup.

It may seem like a right gamble here to think they can keep a clean sheet against a side that has scored at least once in all of their last five, but then again, that’s why this is a 23/20 shot rather than say 4/6.

For me, this has the makings of a 1-0, but 2-0 and 3-0 are also included as possibilities with this one, so I think it’s worth the punt.

James’s Fun Fact

Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku sits fifth in the list of all-time international goalscorers, with 90 goals. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has more goals than him among European players.
