Nap of the day: Beset is well set for a big run in the Alleged Stakes

Nap of the day generic

It has been a big week of racing across both codes, and we’ve had some 1000 and 2000 Guineas clues provided by trials at Newmarket and Newbury, while Haydock hosted a good meeting on Wednesday and the Scottish Grand National took place at Ayr on Saturday.

There are four fixtures taking place across Britain and Ireland on Sunday. The Curragh provides the race of the day, the Group 3 Alleged Stakes, and the Sussex Stayers' Handicap Hurdle is offering a decent prize fund at Plumpton.

Our expert has selected their Nap of the day and the horse in questions runs in the big race at the Curragh. Joseph O’Brien’s runner was an impressive winner in a Listed contest on seasonal debut and the slight step up in grade shouldn't be a problem on that evidence.

Joseph O’Brien landed a couple of winners over jumps at the Aintree Festival last week but he’s predominantly a Flat trainer these days and he runs four in Sunday’s Alleged Stakes. Impressive last-time-out winner BESET could be the one to side with.

The five-year-old started her career with Henry Candy in Britain but she managed to win only once for her previous trainer. That success came in a Class 5 handicap at Wolverhampton in October 2024 and she moved to the Joseph O’Brien yard following that performance.

She made the perfect start to her career with O’Brien and she won a Sligo handicap off a mark of 75 in May. Repeatedly denied a run on that occasion, she did well to win in the end and almost certainly would have kicked further clear, had she not hit traffic.

Beset progressed in Listed company towards the back end of last season and absolutely bolted up when winning the Guinness 0.0 Finale Stakes by seven-and-a-half lengths in November. The ground was heavy that day, which means soft won’t be a problem for her.

The daughter of Expert Eye made an excellent start to the new season when kicking clear to score by three lengths on similar ground at Naas last month. She can be considered likely to improve for the run and the slight step up in grade shouldn’t be beyond her.

Aidan O’Brien runs two and Ryan Moore has picked Twain, who makes his first start since winning a two-year-old Group 1 in France in October 2024. Obviously he’s talented but will probably need the run and Ger Lyons’ Red Letter is another interesting runner.

Trustyourinstinct has some smart form in the book, especially having won a Group 3 over course and distance last term, but his first-time-out record is questionable. Jessica Harrington’s Green Impact shouldn’t be dismissed either but Beset gets the nod.
