Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano Prediction: Mbappe to keep up scoring form

What a week it has been for Real Madrid - and not in a good way. Dropping out of the top eight in the Champions League was bad enough, losing to Jose Mourinho was even worse and then having to play him again in the knockout round just compounds the misery. They'll want to get back on track on Sunday lunchtime (13:00, Premier Sports 2) when they face Rayo Vallecano in La Liga this Sunday.
Our Spanish Football tipster Mark Sochon brings us the Team News, Match Odds and his two Best Bets for the match. Let's check out his Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano Predictions here on Betfred Insights...

Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano Preview:
Real Madrid return to action on Sunday with a local derby against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. The home players will be expecting another frosty welcome from their own fans after a dismal display in Lisbon in midweek.
A 4-2 defeat against Benfica saw Los Blancos miss out on a top-eight finish in the Champions League. Álvaro Arbeloa's team looked defensively vulnerable throughout, and late red cards for Raúl Asencio and Rodrygo capped a miserable encounter from a Madrid perspective, on a night when only a point was needed to secure direct entry into the round of 16.
The Spanish giants will now face a reunion with José Mourinho and Benfica in the play-off round in a few weeks' time, but only after they've played three more league games.
While Arbeloa's first outing also ended in a humiliating cup defeat against Albacete, there were more encouraging signs in between those two losses.
A 2-0 victory at high-flying Villarreal in La Liga last weekend was viewed as one of Real Madrid's most assured displays of the campaign, certainly from a defensive perspective. The perception was of a team that was finally working hard off the ball, and they were rarely troubled by the Yellow Submarine in a tough fixture that historically has often gone badly for the side from the Spanish capital.
There were even signs of the partnership between Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé blossoming at last in the 6-1 demolition of Monaco the week before last. However, the Benfica match was unquestionably a major step back, and the toxic atmosphere that greeted the Real Madrid players in their last home league game against Levante, may well be repeated on Sunday.
Rayo Vallecano will be hoping to feed off that, and they are normally competitive in this fixture. Since going down to a 10-2 defeat at the Bernabéu under Paco Jémez in 2015, Los Franjirrojos have not lost by more than a single goal on any of their five trips to play their big city neighbours.
They also held Los Blancos to a 0-0 draw earlier this season, while four of the last five meetings overall have finished level. That would suggest this won't necessarily be a stroll in the park for the home team.
However, Rayo's current form is really poor. They're going through their toughest period since the appointment of Iñigo Pérez in 2024, and the 38-year-old coach has not found any answers of late to bring their current slump to an end.
Heading into this match, Pérez's side have won just one of their last 11 games in La Liga. They are now very much in the relegation conversation, having clinched a surprise European place last term.
Their last two performances have been particularly concerning. Rayo sunk to a 3-0 defeat in Vigo against Celta on matchday 20, before two stoppage-time goals saw Osasuna win 3-1 in Vallecas last weekend.
Team News:
Despite that 4-2 defeat in Portugal on Wednesday, Arbeloa is not expected to make many changes. Real Madrid don't play in either of the next two midweeks, so there is no need for rotation, with Rodrygo and Eduardo Camavinga the only players seriously pushing to break into the starting lineup.
There are still four defensive injury absentees for the hosts to contend with. The game will come too soon for Éder Militão, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rüdiger, and Ferland Mendy.
As for Rayo Vallecano, they may hand a full debut to January signing Ilias Akhomach, who has joined on loan from Villarreal. That may see them use winger Jorge de Frutos as a striker again, with their long-standing problems up front yet to be resolved.
Unai López and Abdul Mumin are both out injured, but Andrei Ratiu and Iván Balliu both look to have recovered from recent fitness issues and should feature.
Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano Lineups (Predicted)
- Real Madrid: Courtois, Valverde, Asencio, Huijsen, Carreras, Camavinga, Tchouameni, Bellingham, Rodrygo, Mbappe, Vinicius
- Rayo Vallecano:Batalla, Balliu, Lejeune, Ciss, Chavarria, Palazon, Valentin, Diaz, Akhomach, De Frutos, A. Garcia
Match Odds:
Real Madrid are the 1/4 favourites to record what would be a fifth straight league victory. The Draw is priced at 5/1, while you can back Rayo Vallecano to win at 10/1.
If you're expecting a positive reaction from the hosts, they are priced at 4/6 to score in both halves here, and 11/8 to win both halves. You can also back Real Madrid with a -2.00 Handicap at odds of 7/4.
Alternatively, Rayo Vallecano +2.00 Handicap is on offer at 21/20. The visitors can be backed to win either half at 3/1, while Both teams to score is priced at 10/11.
Mbappé has scored first in all four of his Real Madrid appearances since Arbeloa took charge. You can back a repeat at odds of 13/8 on Sunday, while the Frenchman is priced at 15/8 to score two or more goals for what would be the fourth game in a row.
Alternative Anytime Goalscorer options include Jude Bellingham at 6/4, while Vinícius Júnior is available at 23/20. De Frutos is on offer at 7/2 in the same market, while you can back Rayo's pacy winger Álvaro García to score anytime at odds of 4/1.

Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano Stats
- Only Barcelona (413) have attempted more shots than Real Madrid (408) so far this season.
- Kylian Mbappe (100) leads the most shots taken by a single player by 29 from Lamine Yamal.
- Jorge de Frutos (0.19) is tops when it comes to goals per shots from these two squads.
Bet 1 - Kylian Mbappé to score anytime & Real Madrid to score over 1.5 goals @ 8/11 via Bet Builder
The change in the dugout has done little to alter the sense that Real Madrid are a team entirely built around serving Mbappé. The 27-year-old has fired in 36 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions this season, and has already netted 80 for Los Blancos since completing his long-awaited move to Spain in the summer of 2024.
Mbappé has scored at least once in each of his last seven starts. That run ought to continue here against a Rayo defence that has looked shaky in recent weeks. The visitors have let in three or more goals in three of their last five outings in La Liga.
Pérez's team have not even had a particularly tough run of fixtures, with those heavy losses coming against Elche, Celta and Osasuna. If the home team are in the mood, they should have little trouble getting the job done, and I'm backing Mbappé to score anytime and Real Madrid to score over 1.5 goals at 8/11.
Bet 2 - Jorge de Frutos 1+ shots on target @ 1/1
It's still too early to make any sweeping conclusions about Real Madrid under Arbeloa, with their performances under his guidance so far something of a mixed bag.
One trend has been the high number of shots they are facing. Opposing teams have averaged 14.6 attempts per 90 minutes against Arbeloa's Madrid to date. Rayo are a team that likes to get shots away, with their average of 13.5 the sixth-highest figure in La Liga this term.
With the visitors likely to again use De Frutos as their striker rather than on his usual right flank, I'm backing the 28-year-old to have at least one shot on target against his old club at odds of 1/1.
