Watford take on Birmingham City this Thursday, January 1 (15:00 GMT, Sky Sports+) as they look to extend their unbeaten run to seven games. Intriguingly, the Blues were the last team to beat the Hornets, doing so a month ago to the day of this encounter.

Team News

Hamstring injuries to Hornets pair Kwadwo Baah and Rocco Vata will see them miss out at Vicarage Road.

Another Watford absentee is Mamadou Doumbia, who continues on international duty with Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Blues have a duo of suspensions to deal with. Tommy Doyle was sent off in the 3-0 loss to Sheffield United while Christoph Klarer’s early bath came in the dying embers of a 1-1 draw with Derby County.

Alex Cochrane is touch-and-go with an ankle problem for Birmingham. Premier League winner Demarai Gray is sidelined for the next two games with a calf complaint.

Watford vs Birmingham Predicted Lineups

  • Watford: Selvik; Ngakia, Pollock, Alleyne, Bola; Ince, Kyprianou, Louza, Maamma; Chakvetadze, Semedo
  • Birmingham: Allsop; Sampsted, Neumann, Robinson, Cashin; Iwata, Leonard, Roberts, Stansfield, Koumas; Kyogo

Watford vs Sheffield Wednesday Odds

The Hornets are 1/2 to record the victory at Vicarage Road, with Wednesday 9/2 to upset all the odds and grab a second win of the campaign.

The draw is a 3/1 chance, while it’s 4/5 for both teams to score.

Luca Kjerrumgaard is the 4/1 favourite to net the first goal of the game.

Watford vs Birmingham Stats

  • Last season under Tom Cleverley was Watford’s first full season with just one head coach since 2018/19. The manager that season? Current boss Javi Gracia, who replaced Cleverley’s successor Paulo Pezzolano in October.
  • Jay Stansfield has been involved in 37.5% of Birmingham’s league goals this season. He has scored eight of their 32, registering a further three assists.

Today's Football Fixtures

Price Boost: Watford to win and both teams to score was 16/5 now 4/1

An eye-catcher of a Price Boost this one. Eight of Watford’s last 10 games have seen both sides scoring. Birmingham have experienced goals at both ends of the pitch in nine of their last 10 outings.

The Blues got one over on Gracia’s men a month ago, winning 2-1. But Birmingham have not won a game since. Meanwhile, Watford have won four and drawn two across the rest of December. They are the form side, facing a fellow club who let in plenty while scoring.

Luca Kjerrumgaard to score anytime @ 13/8

I tipped this in the Norwich City preview and it did not come in, but hear me out. While Vivaldo Semedo’s heroics were needed in the 90th minute at Carrow Road,  Kjerrumgaard has been a reliable source of goals this campaign.

Seven in 20 is a fine return from Kjerrumgaard. Enough to make him the club’s top league scorer of the season. Of the Championship’s top 20 goalscorers this season, only Rumarn Burrell of QPR and Hull City’s Oli McBurnie can better the Dane’s 54% shooting accuracy.

Those numbers pay off over time and I feel like Vicarage Road will have a Kjerrumgaard strike to celebrate today.
