York racecourse

There are seven meetings across Britain and Ireland on Saturday, including Premier Racedays from both Newmarket and York - while it's also Day 2 of the Welsh Racing Festival at Chepstow alongside action from Chepstow, Hexham, Fairyhouse, Naas and Wolverhampton.

We've studied the cards and come up with some horse racing tips to consider.

Horse Racing Tips - Saturday, October 11

  • 13:35 Chepstow - Ammes @ 5/4
  • 15:55 York - Morshdi @ 5/2
  • 17:05 York - Dark Moon Rising @ 16/1

13:35 Chepstow - Ammes @ 5/4

James Owen goes from strength to strength in the training ranks and, as was the case last season, he’ll likely have a strong hand in the juvenile hurdling division.

It’s only early in the campaign, but it was hard not to be impressed by the ease in which AMMES opened his account over hurdles at Sedgefield last month and he will likely take plenty of beating in Chepstow’s opener under a 7lb penalty.

The gelding showed useful form over middle distances on the Flat earlier this year, landing a novice over 1m4f at this track before turning in some very solid efforts in top handicap company at Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and Haydock.

Currently rated 90 on the level, he cruised through his hurdling debut and made the reopposing Lunar Orbit look decidedly one-pace from the last.

13:35 Chepstow - Winner

15:55 York - Morshdi @ 5/2

There was plenty of market support around for the William Haggas-trained MORSHDI on his debut at Sandown last month and, although he wasn’t able to get the job done, he shaped with significant promise and is marginally preferred in what is likely an above-average maiden at York.

The selection is a brother to Group 2 winning stayer Nakeel and 1m2f UAE winner, Elraaed, and found things happening too quickly for him over 7f at the Esher track.

However, the winner that day was more experienced and was able to control proceedings and my eye was drawn to the late progress made by Morshdi, without Cieran Fallon getting overly serious.

This additional furlong will be a big help to him and he could take a significant leap forward with that first racecourse experience under his belt.

15:55 York - Winner

Morshdi

17:05 York - Dark Moon Rising @ 16/1

This is a typically competitive handicap for this York track and it’ll take plenty of winning.

However, there was a lot to like about the run of DARK MOON RISING over course-and-distance last month and he should be thereabouts once again on his preferred good ground.

The selection has won five times in his career, including a pair of handicaps last season, but he’s yet to get his head in front in nine starts this year. He’s edging down the handicap as a consequence, though, and is now 4lb lower than when scoring at Southwell last November.

Successful at York over 1m4f in 2023, he’s performed well on his last two visits and with 20 runners going to post, he should get the strong pace he needs.

17:05 York - Winner

Dark Moon Rising
