Goodwood racecourse

Four meetings take place across Britain and Ireland on Sunday and there is some competitive fare at Goodwood, with supporting cards from Beverley and Yarmouth, whilst Naas provides some decent action over in Ireland.

Among our fancies is one for trainer Clive Cox, who is unexposed and should provide further success for his in-form yard. Here are my Horse Racing Tips for Sunday.

Horse Racing Tips - Sunday, August 24

  • 14:05 Goodwood - Linwood @ 6/1
  • 15:00 Goodwood - Flash Harry @ 11/4
  • 15:25 Naas - Sky Majesty @  7/4

13:50 Goodwood - Linwood @ 6/1

Richard Hannon’s three-year-old LINWOOD made a pleasing reappearance on the final day of Glorious Goodwood and he will look to build on that performance and confirm the promise shown in his two-year-old season.

He tried to make all on his first attempt at 1m1f and was only beaten just under two lengths, behind two solid yardsticks, one of whom was well-fancied for a Group 3 at York.

He was still travelling well at the 2f pole and was only reeled in in the final half-furlong. That should have blown away the cobwebs after 11 months off the track and stepping back to 1m, a trip over which he recorded two wins last season, should be a plus.

He looks like a progressive type who could rate a bit higher than his current mark of 93 before the season is out and Jamie Spencer, who has the choice of the owners runners, has chosen him ahead of the hat-trick-chasing Great Chieftain.

15:00 Goodwood - Flash Harry @ 11/4

There are only six runners for this Class 2 handicap but Clive Cox’s unexposed three-year-old, FLASH HARRY, could be the one to side with on his second run in a handicap.

He only had one start as a two-year-old, for Sylvester Kirk when a close second at Bath, the form of which worked out quite well but he got off the mark for his new stable at the first time of asking when romping away over 6f at Wolverhampton.

Flash Harry did not help his cause over 5f back at Bath next time when showing his inexperience, racing keenly and hanging most of the way.

He was keen again when stepping into handicap company in the Shergar Cup but, despite losing the lead in the final furlong, he stayed on well.

Cox’s gelding has to learn to settle better to guarantee seeing the 6f out and that should come with experience. And there is no one better with his sprinters than his trainer, and having Rossa Ryan on board can only help.

15:25 Naas - Sky Majesty @ 7/4

The in-form William Haggas yard sends SKY MAJESTY back over to Naas hoping to build on her listed race victory there last month.

The Blue Point filly went unbeaten in three starts at two, which included two Group race wins, and came into this season as one to follow closely. She had a tricky couple of runs to start this season off, racing keenly when only third at Chelmsford before being thrown in at the deep end in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

However, she wasn’t disgraced that day and it was maybe too much too soon, and she was victorious when dropping back to listed level to win last time out at this track. She was entitled to win that day based on ratings and this race looks similar with five of the first six contesting again.

Sky Majesty seems to handle all types of ground and, after only six runs, she surely has more to come and with her yard in great form, she should go close again.

15:25 Naas - Winner Sky Majesty
