Middlesbrough vs Swansea Prediction: More Teesside frustration for Franco

Middlesbrough and Swansea City, who finished 10th and 11th in last season's EFL Championship, return to competitive action on Saturday (15:00, Sky Sports+) as they kick their 2025/26 campaigns off at the Riverside Stadium.
Below are my Middlesbrough vs Swansea predictions, as well as all the essential team news and match odds.

Team News
Callum Brittain could go straight into Middlesbrough's starting XI on Saturday, despite only signing from Blackburn Rovers on Monday. The 27-year-old looks likely to slot in at right wing-back, with Samuel Silvera, who spent last season on loan at Portsmouth and Blackpool, lining up on the opposite flank after impressing new boss Rob Edwards in pre-season.
Edwards' first two summer signings, Alfie Jones (Hull City) and Abdoulaye Kante (Troyes), could also make their competitive debuts, but in the case of the latter, his minutes are likely to be from the bench, following limited action in pre-season.
In attack, expect Tommy Conway and Morgan Whittaker, who failed to score in 16 league appearances following his acrimonious mid-season move from Plymouth Argyle, to start.
Middlesbrough vs Swansea Stats
- Tommy Conway (MID) struck 13 times in the Championship last season
- Goncalo Franco (SWA) was booked in both 24/25 H2Hs
Swansea are sweating on the fitness of centre-back and captain Ben Cabango, who hasn't featured in pre-season and has only played a limited part in training this week.
Cameron Burgess, who joined in the summer as a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Ipswich Town, is a guaranteed starter in the middle of defence, but whether Cabango partners the Australian international against Middlesbrough remains to be seen.
Another central defender, Ricardo Santos, who also joined as a free agent last month, is ruled out with a knee injury sustained in the 2-1 friendly defeat to Cheltenham Town on July 23.
Likewise, 20-year-old defender Filip Lissah (ankle) misses out for Alan Sheehan's side.
However, new signing Kaelan Casey is in line for a Swans debut following his arrival on loan from West Ham United.
Also looking to make competitive debuts for the club are Ethan Galbraith (Leyton Orient), Bobby Wales (Kilmarnock) and Zeidane Inoussa (Hacken), although the latter, alongside midfielder Jisung Eom, only made his return from a minor injury as a substitute in City's final friendly, a 3-1 defeat to Lorient last Saturday, so perhaps the Swede will have to settle for the role of super sub on Teesside.
Middlesbrough failed to win any of their five pre-season games, but finished one place and four points above Swansea last season. Combined with home advantage, you can understand why they have been made 21/20 favourites to win on Saturday, implying a 48.8% probability of success, while the visitors are 11/4, or a 26.7% chance, to beat Boro for the second time this calendar year, following a 1-0 victory at the Swansea.com Stadium on March 8.
Boro had won the previous five meetings, including last season's corresponding fixture at the Riverside (1-0), meaning there hasn't been a draw since April 2022 (1-1). A long-awaited stalemate can be backed at 5/2 on Saturday, while it's 4/5 for both teams to score, and 10/11 for over 2.5 total goals.
Conway (7/4) heads the anytime goalscorer market, with Finn Azaz, who struck 12 goals last term, one fewer than the Scotland international, available at 23/10. First up for the Swans is Liam Cullen (11/4), who notched 11 times in the Championship last season.
Anytime Goalscorer - Tommy Conway (MID) @ 7/4
Following the mid-season departure of Emmanuel Latte Lath to Atlanta United, Conway became Boro's undisputed main man up top, and he netted a further five times after the Ivorian's exit to take his tally to 13 goals in 36 Championship appearances (27 starts).
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a productive pre-season, netting in Boro's 3-3 draw against Mansfield Town on July 19 before bagging a brace in their final friendly against Deportivo La Coruna (2-2) last Saturday.
With Marcus Forss the only other senior striker at the club, Conway should play the majority, if not all, of Boro's season opener against Swansea, marking him out as an attractive option in the anytime goalscorer market.

Player to Receive a Card - Goncalo Franco (SWA) @ 10/3
Portuguese midfielder Goncalo Franco was a popular figure among the Swans faithful during his first season at the club, following his move from Moreirense.
The 24-year-old was an industrious presence in the middle of the park for Swansea, and all but one of his 40 Championship appearances came as a starter.
Franco averaged 3.2 tackles per game, but was regularly whistled by the referee, averaging 1.7 fouls per game, and he was booked six times for his indiscretions last season.
One of his yellows came in Swansea's last meeting with Boro back in March, with the Porto-born ace punished for his third and final foul of that match in south Wales.
Meanwhile, his first card as a Swan came on his debut at the Riverside last August, meaning 33.3% of his bookings have come against Boro.
Almost a year to the date, I'm backing Franco for another telling-off on Teesside, accompanied by a card.
