Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton Prediction: Saints braced for the drop

Right, it's time to accept it. Tottenham are woeful this season and haven’t got half as much criticism as they deserve, especially compared to the likes of Manchester United. They lost again in midweek to Chelsea on Thursday and there was another frosty post-match interview from Ange Postecoglou to boot.
Next up they host one of the worst teams the Premier League has ever seen, Southampton (14:00, Sunday). They could become the first team to be relegated with seven games to play on Sunday if they lose and Wolves win at Ipswich. Below you can find my Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton predictions for this one.

Team News
Postecoglou’s comments after Chelsea, about getting through the 90 minutes without any injuries, leads me to believe he will rotate heavily for this one. It’s a frankly pointless Premier League match, with Southampton almost guaranteed to finish bottom, and Spurs languishing somewhere in the bottom half of the table.
With a vital Europa League quarter-final to come on Thursday against Eintracht Frankfurt, I think the Aussie boss will rotate heavily. Mathys Tel, Pedro Porro, Pape Matar Sarr and Brennan Johnson may all come into the XI, while the likes of Mikey Moore, Archie Gray and Ben Davies could also be called upon.
Richarlison is unlikely to be risked for this one given his recent injury, while Kevin Danso and Dejan Kulusevski remain injured. It will be interesting to see whether the misfiring Son Heung-min will keep his place, given he is not guaranteed to start that quarter-final on Thursday.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton Stats
- Tottenham have won five PL home games this season
- Southampton have lost 12 out of 15 away fixtures
- Pedro Porro has scored twice this term
Southampton will be sweating on the fitness of Paul Onuachu after he was taken off late on with a slight issue, but the big striker will hope to start again here. Matheus Fernandes and Kamaldeen Sulemana should offer support while Lesley Ugochukwu will hope to have recovered from his knock that he picked up in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
Wantaway winger Tyler Dibling had to settle for a place on the bench last time out, but perhaps Saints should consider getting him more Premier League starts, in a bid to raise his transfer value this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton Odds
Tottenham are priced up at 4/11 to win this game having won five of their 15 home matches so far this term. Meanwhile Southampton can be backed at 13/2 and a draw is 9/2. Over 2.5 goals can be backed at 2/5, BTTS is 4/7 and Dominic Solanke is the favourite to open the scoring for the hosts at 9/2.
Tottenham to win to nil @ 7/4
I was considering backing a draw in this game given the changes I expect Tottenham to make, but even with their second XI they should be able to brush aside Southampton. Ivan Juric’s outfit are simply dreadful, even though they managed a point against Palace in midweek.
“We have the goal to not be the worst team in the history of the Premier League. Let's see what we will do,” Juric said before that one. Hardly the most inspiring team-talk I’ve ever heard. Southampton have lost 12 out of 15 away games in the Premier League this season, conceding 31 goals in those games. They just seem to come up short every week, so let’s back Spus to scrape a boring home win without conceding.

Pedro Porro to score anytime @ 6/1
Porro has two goals and six assists this season, and lost his place in the team to Djed Spence for the Chelsea match. However, I think he will start this one because of rotation, and he loves to fly forward especially against weaker teams. He’s only had eight shots on target this term, but I think he will be a real attacking threat against a Southampton side that are unlikely to get out of their own half.
A bit of a long-shot, I admit, but one I think is worth taking a punt on given the lack of value elsewhere.
