Nap of the day generic

The racing week begins with a quartet of meetings across Britain and Ireland mixing jumps and all-weather fare.

They go over obstacles at Punchestown, Plumpton and Ayr in the afternoon while an evening of action on the Tapeta comes from Wolverhampton later.

Monday's NAP will be aiming to give Fergal O'Brien's team another boost after a graded winner on Saturday afternoon.

NAP of the Day - Sunday, February 23

  • 15:15 Plumpton - Kamsinas @ 17/2

There is a good offering on the card at Plumpton on Monday afternoon and it includes the Sussex Stayers Handicap Hurdle, a Class 2 event worth north of £31k to the winner and set to be run over three miles and a furlong.

It could be a race in which Fergal O'Brien enjoys success with KAMSINAS.

Some of the line-up, including the likes of Hititi, Hermino AA and Good Luck Char are proven at this sort of trip, whereas Kamsinas is untested.

The eight-year-old has four wins in 10 starts over timber and we may not have seen his best yet.

Winner of a point-to-point (3m, good to yielding) and a bumper (2m, good) he turned his focus to jumping at Worcester (2m, good to soft) in October 2023 and made a winning start under former stable jockey Paddy Brennan.

He went on to land a Grade 2 novice contest at Haydock before running midfield in the new Formby Novices' Hurdle at Aintree on Boxing Day 2023.

He took a crack at the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury last February, finishing in midfield at odds of 40/1, but was soon back on track scoring over 2m5f at Kempton a month later off a mark of 130.

This term commenced with a 2m4f Aintree handicap win off that same mark and he ran well from 5lb higher at Haydock (2m3f, soft) the following month.

His 2025 began with a slightly disappointing effort at Ascot (2m3½f, good) last month, but he showed going from Newbury to Kempton last spring that he can soon leave a laboured run behind.

He has been eased 1lb by the assessor off the back of that run and his yard is on a high after seeing Tripoli Flyer land the Dovecote Novices' Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday.

Jonathan Burke was in the plate for that Grade 2 success and will be the man in the saddle on this Noel Fehily Racing Syndicates-owned challenger.

He could have more to offer on this first Rules start at a proper staying trip and is taken to land this Sussex Stayers Handicap Hurdle at a venue where his Gloucestershire-based trainer has a near 24 per cent strike-rate.
