Today’s Live Football On TV: What to watch on Wednesday, June 19

Wednesday 19th June 2024, 6:30am

This Thursday (June 20) is supposedly the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, but for those of us struck down by Euros fever, it was almost certainly Tuesday (June 18) as Uefa scheduled just two games to be played, entirely neglecting the 14:00 kick-off time we all know and love - our bosses, maybe less so.

But, fear not, because on Wednesday, we are well and truly back. Three Euro 2024 matches are on the menu and they all feature in today's live football on TV, with ITV kicking off proceedings before handing the baton over to the BBC for the later time slots.

Starting off the day's live football on TV is a Group B game between Croatia and Albania at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg (14:00, ITV1). Both teams are looking for their first point/s off the tournament after suffering opening-round defeats on Saturday.

Croatia lost 3-0 to Spain in Berlin, shipping all three goals in the first half and seeing a second-half Bruno Petkovic penalty saved by Unai Simon.

Albania, meanwhile, got off to the perfect start when Nedim Bajrami capitalised on a mixup between Italy defenders Federico Dimarco and Alessandro Bastoni to put the Red and Blacks ahead inside the first minute. However, Bastoni helped to make amends by equalising in the 11th minute, and five minutes later, Nicolo Barella struck what turned out to be the winning goal in Dortmund.

In the early evening slot are Germany and Hungary, who face off at the Stuttgart Arena (17:00, BBC One), with the sides arriving on the back of contrasting results and performances.

The tournament hosts swept Scotland aside 5-1 in the opening match on Friday, with Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz sending the Germans into a 3-0 lead at half-time.

Ryan Porteus was sent off for an awful challenge which lead to Havertz's successful spot-kick, and the numerical advantage was on show in the second half as Germany struck a fourth through substitute Niclas Fullkrug, though an Antonio Rudiger own-goal just before a fifth goal from Emre Can did give the Tartan Army a consolation effort in a 5-1 defeat.

Germany can now secure their place in the last 16 with a win on Wednesday, but they'll be up against a Hungarian outfit desperate to achieve a positive result themselves after being beaten 3-1 by Switzerland in Cologne on Saturday.

Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer sent the Swiss into the interval two goals to the good before Barnabas Vargas set up a nervy finish with a 66th-minute strike, and it took until added time for Breel Embolo to make sure of the three points for his nation.

Scotland were humbled on the opening day of the tournament last week, but there's no time to feel sorry for themselves as they prepare for a Cologne contest with Switzerland on Wednesday night (20:00, BBC One).

Steve Clarke won't want back-to-back group stage exits on his CV, but the Tartan Army could find it tough against a savvy Swiss side who outclassed Hungary on Saturday.
