Saints made it three big wins in a row in Hull - just as I predicted in last week's column - by 10 points. Just saying!

They backed up the Good Friday derby win and the Betfred Challenge Cup defeat of the Catalan Dragons with a 24-14 win over Hull FC at the KCOM stadium.

It was a bit of a crazy atmosphere in the west side of the city following the club's handling of head coach John Cartwright's departure, and the show of no confidence in him.

Listen, coaches get fired daily, and it’s the nature of the job and they all know it! But there’s a way of doing it, and clearly with John’s reaction, this wasn’t that, and to tell him he wouldn’t be getting the final year of his contract after just seven rounds played with 20 to go, to me, is madness.

The rumour mill that Warrington assistant Steve McNamara was heading to his home town club in 2027 was unsurprising confirmed the day after, and that the Saints game was Cartwright's last in charge.

The Hull FC players seemed to back their Aussie gaffer post-game, staying out on the pitch until all interviews were done, and for me this showed in their first-half performance.

The home side looked by far the most physically dominant side in the opening period, with Saints struggling to get field position to threaten the FC line.

It took 11 minutes for Hull to get the scoreboard moving with a Logan Moy try down the left edge.

But, Saints responded when they finally got some good field position. A short, no-look Jackson Hastings pass to the impressive young backrower Jake Davies got Saints back in the game.

I love a ‘hole running’ second row, and this kid looks like he could add a lot to the edge attack. The ability to hit the ball at pace and show neat footwork - I liked what I saw.

Unfortunately, a lapse in concentration by Davies, George Delaney and Tristan Sailor in defending their own tryline, allowed Amir Bourouh to barge over from dummy-half and send the black and whites into the break 12-6 up.

It was a completely different second 40, with a better Saints and a tiring Hull FC.

Noah Stephens again showed why he’s a certain pick for Paul Rowley with another impressive performance. It was him that brought St Helens level with a trademark barnstorming run, reaching out to score.

A Sailor penalty goal put the visitors ahead for the first time in the game, 12-14. A clumsy Matt Whitley high tackle gave Zak Hardaker the chance to level the scores, which he duly obliged.

But, that was it for the home side as Saints dominated the last 20 minutes.

Sailor, who has really been Saints' X-factor this season, came up with a beautiful grubber kick into the Hull in-goal area for Kyle Feldt to take with ease and touch down. He then added the touchline conversion in off the post. Saints 20-14 with just over 15 minutes remaining.

The final try, this time, was strong defence from Feldt that caused Hardacre to spill the ball. Harry Robertson scooped up and turned the opposition defence inside out to score and secure two vital Betfred Super League points.

There’s still a vast number of first-choice players unavailable, but what this disruption does is give the next in-line an opportunity. The trip to Hull gave young hooker Tom Humphreys a chance to make his debut in the Red V, and he did himself proud.

With the likes of him, Davies, Stephens, Delaney and Robertson, the future looks bright.

Next, it’s back to the BrewDog stadium on Saturday to face a tough Wakefield Trinity side who sit joint-top of the Betfred Super League with Leeds and Saints. The St Helens vs Wakefield Trinity Odds currently have Saints at 4/9, Wakefield 2/1 and the draw 14/1.

This will a proper test for Paul Rowley and his side, but with the confidence in the side through April, I have to back a home win, by six to 10 points.
