In the tradition of iconic game show Bullseye, a Betfred customer has won the prize not that many contestants wanted… a speedboat!

During the long-running TV show hosted by the late Jim Bowen, the joke that gripped the nation was the naff prizes, including a speedboat that was once won by a couple from the Midlands who lived in a high-rise flat.

But for Derrick Mellor, a 54-year-old electrician’s mate from Salford, a speedboat is what he’s always dreamed about – and he can’t wait to get it launched at Anglesey where the family have a static caravan.

The father-of-five (pictured below), who sees himself as something of an action-man that loves the sea, won £20,000 at his local Betfred shop in Langworthy from a 50p bet on the Irish Lotto.

And now, after all five of his Lucky Dip numbers were drawn, Derrick is planning to join the jet set at Trearddur Bay on the Welsh island.

He said: “I only have a kayak and go snorkelling off Anglesey, so I’ve always been a bit jealous of these guys in their speedboats, so now I’m going to join them.

“It really is my dream – and I know the best time to get one is just after Christmas according to a fella who knows about these things in Anglesey. I’m not going to spend a fortune, as I should be able to pick up a decent second-hand one.

“I like to put 50p or a pound on the Irish or French lotto. In fact, I’ve been doing the Irish for 25 years or so and used to always stick to the same numbers – but I’ve now started doing Lucky Dips instead. I’ve been picking up smaller amounts, but never anything like this.

“I’m from Salford, support United and always root for the local bloke in the bookie business – i.e Fred Done – and the odds aren’t bad either!”

Fred said:

“Derrick is clearly a loyal customer and a man after my own heart – especially as a big Red.

“I’m sending him a bottle of champagne so he can launch his boat in style, but that’s on condition he calls it after me or the company!

“It’s great that he and his family will be able to enjoy some exciting times off the Anglesey coast.”
