Wincanton Tips: Unexposed Border looks a gem

There is a seven-race card taking place at Wincanton on Tuesday, which gets underway with a warm novice chase at 12:30, and there are plenty of powerful stables represented with Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls, Olly Murphy and Joe Tizzard among those in attendance.

Jeriko Du Reponet and Regent’s Stroll are the two headline acts in the opening two-runner Beginners Chase, but the field sizes pick up as the action develops, with the other six races providing plenty of each-way interest. Read below for my Wincanton Tips for Tuesday, December 16.

13:00 - The Big Reveal @ 15/8

The Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Chase at 13:00 features a lot of out-of-form horses, but that isn’t the case for The Big Reveal, who finished second to the progressive Diamond Dealer over three miles at Chepstow 25 days ago.

That performance came on the back of a two-length victory at Lingfield when he found plenty for pressure and, while 5Ib higher for that success, this extra furlong in trip promises to eke out more improvement.

The Big Reveal gets on well with conditional rider Joe Anderson, who is unable to claim his usual 3Ib, but he remains lightly raced, having had only 11 runs under rules, and he has taken his form to a new level in his last two races, with the drier ground playing to his strengths.

14:00 - Bespoke Tailor @ 5/4

Swingin Safari is sure to be a warm order at the head of the betting, but he was a faller on his hurdling debut, and Paul Nicholls’ charge could have his work cut out with Bespoke Tailor, who took a huge step forward from his first run over obstacles to his second.

Oliver Signy’s five-year-old finished third last time out in a competitive novice hurdle at Cheltenham and was beaten just over two lengths by Soldier Reeves, who has subsequently finished second in Listed company at Sandown.

His bumper form isn’t a million miles behind that of Swingin Safari, and he has certainly improved for the switch to hurdles, suggesting he can cause plenty of problems for the likely favourite if his jumping doesn’t hold up.

15:00 - Border Gem @ 6/1

Border Gem was no match for St Irene at this course in a novice hurdle 26 days ago, but she shaped encouragingly in staying on for second, and the extra four furlongs in trip should see her to better effect.

Mixing it with that 116-rated runner proved a tall order last time out, but an opening mark of 97 for handicap debut should see her much more competitive than in that 13-length defeat, and her bumper form suggests she could be on a very attractive mark.

Jeremy Scott’s mare was beaten only half a length by the now 108-rated Call Me Legend in a Newton Abbott bumper last April, while on her second start over hurdles, she finished only 10 lengths behind the 131-rated Gentleman Toboot, with the second being the 124-rated A Pai De Nom.
