US Horse Racing Tips: Paul’s best bets from across the pond on Sunday

Our US racing expert,Paul Quigley, brings this week to a close with two picks on Sunday from Woodbine and Oaklawn Park.

21:37 Woodbine (Race 7) – The Woodstock Stakes – Two Out Hero (5) @ SP

Two runners are going to separate themselves from the rest at the head of the market. The horse with the best form is Two Out Hero (5). He won his first two career starts including a stake here. Since then, he’s been upped in distance to a mile or more.

He ran third in The Grade 1 Summer Stakes on his last start as a juvenile. Both his starts since he returned as a three year old have resulted in heavy defeats. He had legitimate excuses in both. His pedigree suggests he may be best seen as a sprinter. 

Two Out Hero (5) may not go off as the favourite as Arbiter (2) appears to have a big pace advantage. He won his first two starts, running a big speed figure at Turfway in December. The Wes Ward trained colt made his comeback in a stake at Gulfstream last month.

He lost all chance after being steadied at the start. With a clean beginning, he should be loose on the lead. If that is the case, he may be very tough to reel in.

Based on their last runs, both the market leaders are hardly bomb-proof. With that in mind, backers could consider the bigger priced runners. Gnome (1) is a two-time winner on Tapeta. He has not been disgraced in stakes events since.

Silver Is Best (3) is a stakes winner on today’s surface. He is the only runner in here who has not had a race this year. El Capo (4) is a maiden but did catch some decent fields at The Fair Grounds.

22:39 Oaklawn Park (Race 8) – The Majestic Stakes – Ervadean (6) @ SP

Trainer Dallas Stewart is double-handed here. Both his runners are last time out winners. His Anakarina (5) won a ratings handicap by five lengths from Dream Concert (1).

In doing so, she ran a speed figure that suggests she can win this stake. She does her best running when on the lead, matching an all the way victory at Churchill in September. She is a big player but may have to deal with the likes of Spring Dancer (4) early on.

That four year is a progressive filly. She is on a hat-trick after back to back allowance conditions events. The form of her last race has been franked with a few of the beaten runners coming back to run well.           

The other Dallas Stewart trained entrant is Ervadean (6). She ended a run of seconds when winning an allowance conditions event here last month. In doing so she beat a Grade 1 placed filly. There is a decent chance she gets a good stalking trip just off the pacesetters. With that in mind, she may be the play here.    

The other runner likely to take money here is R Pretty Kitty (2). She has shown improved form lately despite being claimed away from top trainer Saffie Joseph. The four year old won an allowance conditions event by four lengths in February.

A month later, she lost a starter event by a head. She is too sharp to ignore under regular rider Abel Cedillo. In contrast to her, Pistol (3) has lost her form. She’s had nine weeks freshening so may be ready to run her best. That best includes a nice win at Churchill in November. If she is a double-figure price, she is well worth considering.
