21:23 Churchill Downs – Being Myself @ SP
Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Cherie DeVaux looks to have a favourite's chance with BEING MYSELF (5) here.
She is a lightly-raced four-year-old who made a fine return at The Fair Grounds in January. In a race at today’s level, she ran a good second. The winner has been placed in back to back Grade 1s since.
She’s been freshened up and has been working nicely for her return. She has a four length victory on her last visit to Churchill. Her trainer is in fine form at this meet.
Union Mist (4) scored at the level below this one at Keeneland last month. She wasn’t winning out of turn but did run a career best in the process.
She’s closely matched with Sierra November (6) off a run at The Fair Grounds in February. Her old rival comes off a below par effort at Keeneland but she was off slowly. Foreseen (2) finished ahead of her. That mare returns to a venue she’s won both her career races at.
Anna's Promise (1) and Amarth (3) both step up from one turn races. It will be no surprise if the rail drawn filly improves as a result. Her best form has come over today’s distance and configuration. That includes a runner up try in The Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. A repeat of that run and she will go very close.
It will be interesting to see if she or Amarth (3) can make the lead on their own. Either filly would be dangerous under that scenario.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
21:34 Gulfstream Park – Charlie's Wish @ SP
Top trainer at this meet Saffie Joseph is double-handed. His first string is Indy Bay (2). She was beaten at odds-on when second in a handicap here last month. Not for the first time, her stamina seemed tested over a mile. She is better over shorter. Her career best effort came last summer when taking a Grade 2 over today’s distance. She is the gal to beat.
Her jockey Micah Husbands seems to have preferred her to stablemate Her Town (3).
She has been freshened up after a below par effort in March. The four year old has a chance off a victory over course and distance in January. She is unexposed and there may have better to come from her. Rasheed Hughes is five from twelve when he rides for her trainer so all is not lost with her.
CHARLIE'S WISH (6) may be worth siding with in the hope she can turn things around. Her recent form looks only average. She has been trying stakes company on the turf and Tapeta. Her old form on dirt is very playable. She’s six year old so may not be capable of that anymore. Hopefully her odds justify the risks.
Gallop d'Hermes (7) came back to form last month. She had Puckered (1) back in third when winning at the level below this one. The extra furlong of this race should not be a problem. It won’t be for Braganza (5).
She missed by a head at Penn National on her comeback. She has tactical speed in on paper at least without too much early zip. Poiema (4) seems a little quicker early on. The last time she raced over seven furlongs, she wired a field at today’s level at Tampa. She’s inconsistent but her best run is good enough to upset this field.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
