19:25 Laurel Park (Race 6) - Takethemoneyhoney @ SP
Trainer Michael Moore has two fillies entered. His Alani (12) is a three-time winner locally. She is holding her form well with a fine effort at Parx earlier this month. Both she and stablemate Takethemoneyhoney (4) are entered for a stake in Pennsylvania next week. The chances are one of them will be scratched. Takethemoneyhoney (4) is only a nose away from a perfect five-for-five record in her career.
Her last two victories came over a mile including a stake. She did win a conditions event over course and distance in February. She’s been working really well for her first race since May.
Grammy Girl (3) and Passage East (11) ran first and third in a starter event at Aqueduct last month. The first named has ran well again since ,with a head runner up to a promising filly nine days ago. Passage East (11) had a very wide trip when behind her so may get closer this time.
Onyx Ten (1) is an improving Maryland bred. She’s won back to back races including a state bred stake here last month. The three year old has place claims. So too has Sultry Lass (2). She was claimed off a good third at Keeneland last month. The six-year-old has worked well for her new trainer. Like a few in here, St. Benedicts Prep (8) has alternative engagements in other races. She is inconsistent but a graded stakes calibre mare at her best.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
19:54 Laurel Park (Race 7) - Subrogate @ SP
Like the race before, a few of these have alternative engagements so there could be key scratches. Maximus Meridius (6) is entered for a stake at his home base at Parx next week. He has been freshened up since running second in a stake there in September.
The first and third gave the form a boost by being placed in a Grade 3 at Aqueduct next time. If he runs, he can give likely favourite Prince of Jericho (8) a race. He has won seven times at Laurel including a stake in January. He has not raced since February. His trainer Brittany Russell has a super record with lay off runners. She brought him back to win the last time he came back from a long absence.
Showstopper Copper (5) comes off two big efforts in defeat at Delaware. His last run was particularly noteworthy as he pressed fact fractions. He has to be reckoned with. So too has Subrogate (1). He ran a bit flat in a Grade 3 at Aqueduct at the start of the month. He’d been away since June. That day he won a stake over course and distance. He may be the answer here.
Petingas Twin (2) came back to his best last month. He had Sunny Breeze (7) back in third when winning a minor event here. That run gives him a chance. Twisted Ride (3) comes off back-to-back runner up tries including one over course and distance.
He is too sharp to ignore. In contrast, Dean Delivers (9) is out of form. He may improve for his comeback and has the back races to upset this field.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
22:25 Churchill Downs (Race 10) - Giocoso @ SP Longshot - California Burrito @ SP
The hat-trick seeking Troubleshooting (2) looks the runner to beat. He followed up a Grade 1 victory at Kentucky Downs with a Grade 3 win at Keeneland last month. The good news about his chances are two-fold. He has tactical speed and can make his own racing luck. In addition, he may again not get the respect he deserves in the market.
If he was going for a higher profile trainer, he would be a lot lesser price. The worry with him is a mile seemed as far as he wanted to go last time. He has slightly further to last home here.
A trio of this field finished behind Troubleshooting (2) last time. Simulate (10) and Plensa (11) ran below form although the race flow played against them. More speed to chase down and the pair could feature late on. Giocoso (7) ran well behind him. He was only beaten less than two lengths after being slowly away. He’s very consistent and looks a solid place chance at least.
Mansetti (6) is an interesting Woodbine invader. His best effort came when winning The Kings’ Plate, the first leg of The Canadian Triple Crown. If he can transfer his form trying the turf for the first time, he can win this. Montador (3) has a lesser CV but enters calculations. He’s lightly raced, winning an allowance conditions event well here at the start of the month.
His owners Godolphin also run Chapman's Peak (8) who has a very similar profile. The penny has suddenly dropped with him with a maiden and an allowance victories.
Anegada (4) and Outrunner (5) come off fine efforts in stakes events. The first named won at Hawthorne last month. Outrunner (5) ran third in a deeper race, a Grade 3 at Colonial Downs. His trainer rarely has a runner at Churchill. The pair add depth to this stake. So too does Flying Mohawk (9). He’s not raced since running down the field in The Grade 1 Kentucky Derby in May.
He looked a promising runner prior to that with two victories on turf and a second in a Grade 3 on Tapeta. He did win first time back after his last lay off.
California Burrito (1) is interesting despite a long absence and never racing on turf before. He won a stake on Tapeta at Turfway in February. It is easy to forgive his next two starts on account of pace and the surface. His dam was a stakes performer on the grass so returning in this spot is not without hope. He has been working up a storm in the mornings. His trainer has a fine record with lay off horses. He’s worth a saver at very least.
