Breeders’ Cup Turf Picks: Looking for a big-priced winner

One of - if not - the premier sprint race on the turf worldwide is Race 8 on the card at Del Mar this Saturday for the Breeders' Cup Turf.

Paul Quigley is rolling the dice here and passing on the two favourites - Minnie Hawk and Rebel's Romance - but backing another from Charlie Appleby's stable to win at a big number...

It is likely to be biggish prices bar two runners here. Betfred oaks winner Minnie Hawk (8) lost a tight one in The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe when on a six timer. That and her other form this year makes her the one to beat. Her last race at Longchamp could have left its mark. It is worth noting that Aifan O'Brein has had winners of this race like Found who came to America with less of gap between starts.   

The price difference between Minnie Hauk (8) and Rebel's Romance (1) may not be that much come post time. He is bidding to win this race for the third time. He is seven now but still retains all his ability. He was three plus lengths too good for Redistricting (4) and El Cordobes (10) in The Turf Classic (G1) at Aqueduct in September. The fact he runs these American turf tracks so well is a big positive.    

In terms of form in Europe, El Cordobes (10) and Wimbledon Hawkeye (6) are a cut below the two favourites. Both have place claims at least. El Cordobes (10) got no pace to chase down when third to Rebel's Romance (1) last time. With Silawi (7) likely adding to the speed mix, he should get a better set up. The consistent Wimbledon Hawkeye (6) won a Grade 3 with a massive purse at Kentucky Downs in August. This track is nothing like that but Frankie Derrori does stay on him.      

Goliath (2) has the back class to contend. He may be coming back to his 2024 best judging by a victory in a Group 1 in Germany last time. Amiloc (3) is an improving three year old. He probably needs a breakneck pace to reel these in late.
