Newton abbot racecourse

There are a total of five meetings scheduled across Britain and Ireland on Wednesday with a mixture of Jumps and Flat racing to look forward to.

While there is racing to take in from Fakenham and Nottingham, it’s the action from Newton Abbot, Kempton and Dundalk that provides the three selections for Wednesday.

15:58 Ffos Las - Bank On Frank @ 12/1

Philip Hobbs’ and Johnson White’s ROYAL JEWEL has already achieved more over fences than he did over hurdles and, whilst he’s been a beaten favourite on his last two starts, there’s every reason to believe he remains on a decent mark.

The six-year-old has only finished out of the money on one of his seven chase starts to date and ended last season with three highly respectable efforts, including a win over 2m at Chepstow, a narrow and somewhat unlucky defeat over 2m4f at the same venue and when third over 2m5f at this track - when he ran much better than the bare result gives him credit for on what was virtually unraceable ground.

He’s now 7lb higher than his win, but he ran to Racing Post Ratings of 121 and 126 at Chepstow, suggesting he’s still a step ahead of the assessor off 121, minus Callum Pritchard’s 5lb claim.

16:01 Dundalk - Evening Blues @ 13/8

Ger Lyons’ EVENING BLUES is on something of a retrieval mission following a lacklustre effort at The Curragh in June, but he’s a real standout on previous efforts and will be hard to beat if reacting positively to a first-time hood.

The son of Blue Point ran an eye-catching race to finish third over 5f at The Curragh on his debut, keeping on nicely under a considerate ride having showed signs of greenness and been short of room at a vital stage.

His next start at Naas was even better, beaten just a length-and-a-quarter to Aidan O’Brien’s Albert Einstein, who followed up in a Group 3 subsequently and is one of the market leaders for next season’s 2,000 Guineas.

He pulled 12 lengths clear of the third that day and a reproduction of that will make him extremely hard to beat.

16:17 Kempton - Lieutenant Kije @ 7/2

There are a number of potential improvers on show in the opening nursery at Kempton, none more so than the Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole-trained LIEUTENANT KIJE, who has been gelded since finishing second over this course-and-distance in August.

The son of Sergei Prokofiev has improved with each of his three stats to date, running to Racing Post Ratings of 52 when down the field on his debut over 6f at York, 6o when third at Ffos Las and 68 when runner-up here in a first-time tongue-tie.

That leaves him with a bit to find off this opening official mark of 73, but the combination of a 70-day break, gelding operation and removal of the tongue-tie could well bring about the required level of improvement.

This yard shows a healthy level stakes profit of £33.75 at this track over the past five years.

16:17 Kempton - Winner
