Tuesday Racing Tips: Cavern can open his account

There’s a good mix of Flat and National Hunt action on Tuesday, two of each in the afternoon followed by an AW fixture under the lights at Southwell.

First off is Leicester (14:00) before Brighton (14:15), Galway (14:20) and Huntingdon (14:37). Southwell’s eight-race card gets under way a bit later at 16:57. Amongst our Tuesday fancies is one for in-form trainer James Tate, who looks capable of making a winning handicap debut in the 16:30 at Leicester. Read on for my Horse Racing Tips.

15:20 Galway - Jacovec Cavern @ 7/1

The Paul Hennessy-trained JACOVEC CAVERN remains a maiden over hurdles after 15 attempts, but the two-time Flat winner has been running to a very consistent and solid level in defeat this season and should go well on his return to handicap company.

Successful on the level over 1m4f and 1m6f for Jack Channon in 2022, he was initially highly tried over hurdles, contesting the Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and Grade 1 Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival. He acquitted himself well in both races and finished a creditable eighth in the Grade 3 Greatwood Hurdle last November.

He may have won at Cork in March but for falling at the final flight and has run to Racing Post Ratings of between 115 and 122 on five separate occasions over the last year, most recently when runner-up in a maiden hurdle at Navan last month. That makes him a major player off his current official mark of 114 and Danny Mullins takes over from an inexperienced conditional rider.

16:30 Leicester - Natural Force @ 4/1

James Tate has enjoyed a fine campaign, sending out over 40 winners at an impressive strike-rate of 22 per cent. He did particularly well in September (10-29) and that momentum has continued into this month, the Newmarket-based handler hitting the target with five of his eight runners so far.

Therefore, I’m expecting a big run from his lightly raced NATURAL FORCE in the 0-85 handicap over 5f at Leicester on Tuesday, the four-year-old expected to be well suited by a return to the minimum trip after appearing not to last home over 6f at Newcastle last time.

Successful on his debut over 5f at Ascot on soft ground in May 2023, he wasn’t seen again until this summer, returning with an encouraging third in novice company under a penalty at Ripon.

He was only just below that level at Newcastle subsequently and clearly retains plenty of potential now going handicapping. He’s by no means chucked in off 84, but he’s up against some mostly exposed rivals.

Ollie Pears’ GHISA created a good impression when winning on her debut over 6f at Wolverhampton last month and she may be capable of defying a penalty, up in trip.

Out of an unraced half-sister to a UAE mile Listed winner, she was nibbled at in the market on her introduction and came home strongly down the outside under Saffie Osbourne to win by a growing margin of a length, seemingly with plenty of running left, at odds of 20/1.

She ran to a Racing Post Rating of 75 on that occasion - much the best form on offer in this field - and the extra furlong here ought to be in her favour.

She has already proven herself on this Tapeta surface, is well drawn in stall one and Hollie Doyle is a good booking.
