Pontefract scaled

Flat racing holds sway across Britain and Ireland on Monday, with six meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the evening.

We've had a good look at the cards and come up with three horse racing tips - including one for trainer Kevin Ryan, who's won the opening nursery handicap at Pontefract twice in the last five years and could have one primed for another success.

Horse Racing Tips - Monday, October 6

  • 13:58 Pontefract - Dacres Cross @ 13/2
  • 15:50 Stratford - Mr McLoughlan @ 7/4
  • 17:25 Pontefract - Emperor Caradoc @ 12/1

13:58 Pontefract - Dacres Cross @ 13/2

Trainer Kevin Ryan has a good record in the opening 6f nursery handicap at Pontefract and top weight DACRES CROSS has found a nice opportunity to get back into the winner's enclosure under Tom Eaves.

The two-year-old son of Prince Of Lir won a 6f Carlisle handicap on good ground from a mark of 70 in August, doing it the hard way from the front, and he is only 3lb higher in the weights now.

Soft ground is forecast and that would be the only slight concern as he is yet to be tested in the mud, but he takes a sizeable drop down in grade after two tough assignments at York and Doncaster and should be up to the job if he does handle conditions.

Given he dwelt badly at the start at Doncaster when last seen running in a very hot handicap, he actually ran a very nice race when beaten less than five lengths. If he breaks away on terms, he could prove hard to catch.

15:50 Stratford - Mr McLoughlan @ 7/4

Next up is the extended 2m novices' hurdle at Stratford and it looks like a nice opportunity for MR MCLOUGHLAN to win back-to-back over hurdles for trainer Jack Jones, with Sean Bowen a top jockey booking.

Bowen rode the five-year-old gelding to victory on his second hurdles start at Worcester three weeks ago when value for more than the one-length winning margin.

That was on soft ground but he ran well in a couple of bumpers when trained by Craig Lidster, including when runner-up on good at Sedgefield, so conditions shouldn't be an issue. He could be a tough nut to crack here again.

15:50 Stratford - Winner

17:25 Pontefract - Emperor Caradoc @ 12/1

The final tip of the day comes in the closing 6f handicap at Pontefract and EMPEROR CARADOC gets the nod in a competitive affair thanks to his eye-catching effort last time out.

The son of Siyouni was beaten only around half a length when fourth of seven runners at Hamilton 15 days ago, travelling powerfully throughout and just unable to quicken inside the final half-furlong.

Emperor Caradoc never runs a bad race at Pontefract and has won around here in the past. He is just 3lb above his last winning mark and the stable does well around here too, so he should go close.
