Sunday Racing Tips: Revenge for Montezuma at Musselburgh

There is flat and jumps racing in both the UK and Ireland on Sunday, with five meetings taking place across the afternoon. On the flat there are two really good cards at Leopardstown and Musselburgh, while over the jumps at Ffos Las, Wincanton and Down Royal.
Among my Sunday Horse Racing Tips is one for trainer Jim Goldie who looks set for a good season in his second year with the handler.
Sunday Horse Racing Tips - April 12
- 18:45 Musselburgh - Montezuma @ 3/1
- 18:15 Musselburgh - Kelpie Grey @ 20/1
- 17:20 Ffos Las - Pooley’s Promise @ 10/1

18:45 Musselburgh - Montezuma @ 3/1
There has been no more eye-catching runner so far this nascent flat season than Jim Goldie's MONTEZUMA, who looked like a horse to follow at the opening meeting here last week.
He was easy to back under 5lb claimer Lauren Young that day, before the pair's chance was compromised when they were awkwardly away and found themselves in rear.
Still nearly last with only a furlong to run and despite meeting more trouble when making his challenge, the selection absolutely scythed through the field in the latter stages and, although the winner had flown, he looked a horse well ahead of his mark.
Paul Mulrennan takes over in the saddle here and, with that run under his belt and a faster surface which should be to his liking, this ex-Godolphin four-year-old can notch his first win before progressing up the ranks.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
18:15 Musselburgh - Kelpie Grey @ 20/1
Montezuma will hopefully be bringing up a quick double for Goldie and Mulrennan, as stablemate KELPIE GREY has plenty going for him in the preceding race.
A more exposed sort than the four-year-old, this six-year-old returns off a mark 9lb lower than when he began his last campaign with second place at Ayr last July.
That wasn't his only good reappearance run as he struck at the first time of asking at Musselburgh when returning to the course in 2024, with a convincing success over a mile.
He followed that up with wins at this trip again at Musselburgh and then at Ayr and has a record of 3-11 at this trip, with those two most recent wins coming off marks higher than he will run off here.
After running with such zest on his first run last season, he hit the frame on his next three starts, but was unable to get his head in front.
However, after another good run in the Ayr Bronze Cup, several below-par efforts in attritional conditions at the end of the season have seen his mark tumble and he can take advantage.

17:20 Ffos Las - Pooley’s Promise @ 10/1
Neil Mulholland has his string in great form, 5-33 with another 10 places in the last fortnight and seven-year-old POOLEY'S PROMISE can enhance that record in this big field handicap hurdle.
This is only his second start with his new trainer and it was no surprise he was backed to exploit his lowly mark of 80 on stable debut last time, when he weakened out of things late on at Taunton.
That was not only his first start for Mulholland but his first for over three months, so it was a decent run in the circumstances.
He was dropped 3lb for that run and his trainer has seen fit to add a tongue tie to the cheekpieces enlisted there, hopefully an encouraging sign that connections feel a win is possible from his mark.
Jack Tudor comes in for the ride and he was on the trainer's most recent winner on his only ride for him so far this season.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
