Horse Racing Tips: Jubilee to prove the Alpha at Warwick

A busy day is in store and our focus - providing the weather doesn't wreak further havoc - is the eight-race meeting at Warwick.

Among our horse racing tips for the afternoon is one for trainer Ben Pauling, who looked the real deal when breaking the course record in a Grade 2 novices’ chase at Kempton over Christmas.

13:15 Warwick - Jubilee Alpha @ 6/5

JUBILEE ALPHA’s form has plateaued a bit of late, but she has still run to a high level in defeat and sets a clear standard in this mares’ only Listed event. 

The seven-year-old was unfortunate not to make it five wins on the bounce earlier in the campaign, the mare making a real Horlicks of the second-last when still on the bridle under Harry Cobden. She rallied tenaciously on the run-in, getting to within a length of Sweet Caroline.

That was a career-best effort in terms of Racing Post Ratings (144) and she was only a shade below that when fifth at Cheltenham (142) and second at Sandown (138), both times behind Dan Skelton’s Nurse Susan.

She’s well worthy of her official mark of 139 and should come home in front if running to that level.

It was a Christmas to remember for Ben Pauling and Ben Jones, the pair claiming significant victories at Kempton with The Jukebox Man in a thrilling King George VI Chase and MAMBONUMBERFIVE in the Grade 2 Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase, which was won in a course record time. 

The latter, who won a Grade 2 juvenile hurdle at Kempton 12 months ago, is proving himself an even better chaser, his seven-length demolition of Hansard at the Sunbury track taking his record in chases to a perfect 3-3. 

He’s run to Racing Post Ratings of 130, 140 and now 149 in this sphere and has the potential to go much higher, having made a couple of significant errors at successive fences down the back. 

This sharp track should suit and he’ll likely have too many gears for his two rivals.
