Wincanton scaled

There are a total of five meetings set to take place across Britain and Ireland on Wednesday, three afternoon jump fixtures followed by a pair of evening AW Flat cards.

Wincanton, Southwell, Sedgefield, Dundalk and Kempton are the five offerings to start April off with a bang, and among our fancies is one for in-form trainer Syd Hosie, who makes a quick reappearance after landing a gamble at Taunton last week.

14:20 Wincanton - Grand Vendetta @ 4/9

Only five go to post in the opening novices’ hurdle at Wincanton, but three of those picked up a victory last time out and it may well prove a warm race.

Preference is for the Paul Nicholls-trained GRAND VENDETTA, who accounted for the useful Wandering Ego (winner since) when scoring at Taunton in February and should have more to come now going up in trip.

The six-year-old, whose initial sale price doubled to €140,000 in 2023, shaped with plenty of promise behind the now 127-rated Modern Man on his debut at Chepstow in December and showed the benefit of that experience when going one better over an extended 2m3f at Taunton on heavy ground.

16:30 Southwell - Passing Pleasure @ 5/4

The Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero-trained PASSING PLEASURE was denied a hat-trick at Newcastle last month, but it was another personal best from the six-year-old, who should give another good account at Southwell.

Passing Pleasure won one of his five starts over hurdles, that success coming on his debut for this yard off a mark of 100 at Musselburgh in December, and he has improved steadily since, following up on his chasing debut off the same mark before suffering a neck defeat off 109 at Newcastle.

He is up another 6lb for that, but he pulled 16 lengths clear of the third on that occasion and ran to a Racing Post Rating of 120, so should be well up to defying his new mark, particularly with first-time cheekpieces added.

16:50 Wincanton - Victory Shout @ 9/4

Syd Hosie has hit the target with three of his last seven runners, with VICTORY SHOUT initiating a double for the trainer at Taunton last week when landing a big gamble on just his second handicap start.

The five-year-old showed some useful form on the Flat for Karl Burke, winning two of his 12 starts for that yard and reaching a peak official mark of 89.

He proved rather underwhelming when switched to hurdles, beaten wide margins at Fontwell and Newbury, prior to pulling up on his handicap debut at Exeter.

However, the hood he had worn on those outings was left off at Taunton and he took advantage of a mark matching his current Flat rating, justifying a wave of market support in the process (13-2 from 14-1 on course).

He has surely got more to come and this race at Wincanton looks very winnable.
