After a tricky start to the royal meeting, I've landed on some big-priced selections - including a 50/1 shot in the opener - for Day 2.

14:30 - Shine On Me each-way @ 50/1

Karl Burke and Wathnan Racing won the Queen Mary last year with Leovanni, and they'll be hopeful about repeating the feat 12 months later with Zelaina after the Mehmas filly's smart debut at Nottingham earlier this month.

However, I think the bet - each-way under Betfred's Extra Place terms - is Wathnan's other runner, SHINE ON ME, at huge odds.

Regular readers will already be aware of Archie Watson's £160k daughter of Havana Grey, for I was sweet on her chances on debut at Lingfield exactly 18 days ago, on account of Wathnan Racing's retained rider James Doyle partnering her over the likes of the aforementioned Leovanni for more lucrative prizes at Haydock.

She failed to reward our support, finishing third of six, a couple of lengths off the pace. At face value, that form is a long way off what's required to win a Group 2 at Royal Ascot, but her performance should be marked up big time. She was laboured out of the gates, losing multiple lengths off the bat, and ran green thereafter. There was certainly promise in her performance.

Watson has been talking up her chances this week, suggesting there's any amount of improvement to come from his filly who's been working backwards from the Queen Mary.

If she'd have won in Surrey, what price would she be here? 25/1 at most? At 50s, she's well worth another try.

14:30 Royal Ascot - Each-way (1/5 - 4 places) Shine On Me

15:05 - Pinhole each-way @ 11/1

In an open renewal of the Queen's Vase, a chance is taken on Ralph Beckett's PINHOLE.

The Juddmonte-owned Frankel colt was fourth, albeit 10 lengths off the pace, in the Chester Vase that produced the Betfred Derby 1-2 last month, which is clearly very strong form.

That was just the third start of his career, having debuted for the retired Sir Michael Stoute back in October before winning a modest affair at Southwell on his first start for new connections just before Christmas, and it's likely the full-brother to Group 1 winner Quadrilateral has a lot more to offer.

At the prices with four places available, this is another each-way suggestion.

15:05 Royal Ascot - Each-way (1/5 - 4 places) Pinhole

15:40 - Fallen Angel @ 10/3

The Duke Of Cambridge Stakes can go to dual Group 1 winner FALLEN ANGEL for Karl Burke and Wathnan Racing.

The four-year-old daughter of Too Darn Hot, who won the Irish 1000 Guineas last year, tends to come on plenty for her first run of a season, which was in a red-hot renewal of the Lockinge at Newbury last month.

That form behind the likes of Lead Artist, Queen Anne runner-up Rosallion and last year's 2000 Guineas hero Notable Speech reads very, very well in the context of Wednesday's race - especially after reading her trainer's comments that she needed it and has "definitely sharpened up" in the meantime.

There's every chance she'll take a considerable step forward in Berkshire, with first-time cheekpieces to hopefully eke out further improvement, as she's eased in grade back against her own sex.

I think she'll take a bit of beating if performing to her best.

15:40 Royal Ascot - Winner Fallen Angel

16:20 - Los Angeles @ 9/4

The Prince Of Wales's Stakes has an illustrious roll of honour including the likes of Brigadier General, Dubai Millennium, Highland Reel and most recently Auguste Rodin. LOS ANGELES can add his name to that list on Wednesday.

Aidan O'Brien's Camelot colt was a classy three-year-old last season, placing in the Betfred Derby before landing the Irish version. He then won the Great Voltigeur at York before fourth and third-place finishes in the Irish Champion Stakes and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe respectively.

He's been flawless so far this term, following up a Group 2 victory at the Curragh last month with success in the Tatterstalls Gold Cup on return to the County Kildare venue a few weeks later.

There was little separating the selection and the reopposing Anmaat the last day and I suspect the latter will prove popular being it was his comeback run against a race-fit rival and he travelled so stylishly through the race, but he's nowhere near as consistent as the selection, who has a real battling attitude. He can confirm that form.

French raider Map Of Stars is there with every chance and See The Fire was emphatic, albeit in fillies' company at a lower grade, at York's Dante Festival, but it's Los Angeles for me.

17:00 - Sisyphean each-way @ 18/1

It's good fun, but the Royal Hunt Cup - a 30-runner handicap over the straight mile - is a devilishly-tricky affair.

My overwhelming advice is to look for one at a bit of a price. There's been only two winning favourites since 1997.

With that in mind, SISYPHEAN is my each-way (6 places) selection at 18s.

Kevin Ryan's four-year-old son of Dubawi is a bit in-and-out, but on his day he's very capable and fully deserving of his mark (92).

His narrow defeat off two pounds lower at York last time out following a 215-day break was a clear career-best, and the relatively lightly-raced individual should have more to offer.

Since his debut in August 2023, Sisyphean has only raced over a mile on six occasions, recording form figures of 241712. That's pretty good going.

He seems to be better from the front, or at least prominent, so his middle draw in stall 13 is ideal for him to get out quickly and get into a rhythm.

Whether he can dominate a big field like this at Royal Ascot of all places, who knows, but I'm hopeful he can at least give us a good run for our money.

17:00 Royal Ascot - Each-way (1/5 - 6 places) Sisyphean

17:35 - Serialise each-way @ 10/1

It doesn't get much easier for punters when the Kensington Palace Stakes comes around. Twenty four fillies go to post for this 0-105 handicap, also over the straight mile.

I'm avoiding the market leaders once again and chancing Jessie Harrington's SERIALISE each-way.

The four-year-old daughter of Footstepsinthesand isn't the Group horse in a handicap, nor does she appear to have tonnes in hand, but she's extremely consistent and crucially has some experience in big-field handicaps.

Her third (of 19) at Leopardstown last September is smart form, while there's even more to like about her second (of 18) the Emerald Mile Handicap at the Curragh last month. She travelled very well that day, but was ultimately no match for Ed Dunlop's highly-rated Skukuza under the Ryan Moore drive.

Interestingly, she's rated 88 in Ireland but only 85 on these shores, so she's given a tentative vote in this ultra-competitive contest.

17:35 Royal Ascot - Each-way (1/5 - 5 places) Serialise

Odds correct at time of publishing.

18:10 - Sovereign Spell each-way @ 25/1

Last but not least, I think SOVEREIGN SPELL is good each-way value for the Windsor Castle - another Extra Place Race.

Raphael Freire's two-year-old Invincible Spirit colt was a 120k guineas breeze-up buy who was narrowly denied on debut at Newmarket by Charlie Appleby's Rising Power. That €600k purchase has since won under a penalty - while the third-placed Moonfall, sent off 10/11 at HQ, obliged at Newbury on his subsequent start.

Sovereign Spell, who holds an entry for the G1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh in August, likely performed to a mark somewhere in the mid-high 80s on debut, and is open to any amount of improvement.

That puts him right in the mix as far as I'm concerned, yet his price suggests otherwise. Under the brilliant Rossa Ryan, he can outrun his odds.

18:10 Royal Ascot - Each-way (1/5 - 4 places) Sovereign Spell
