Royal ascot lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

Day 2 of the Royal meeting, another spectacular seven-race fiesta kicking in at 14:30, and including another four Group contests - notably the mouth-watering G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes (16:20), which I'm previewing in a separate piece.

I'm playing each-way again to maximise our chances in what is certainly one of the most competitive racing weeks you'll find anywhere in the sport. Let's get down to business then!

  • 15:40 (Duke of Cambridge) - Fallen Angel @ 11/4

Fast Racing Results

15:05 (Queen's Vase) - Carmers @ 6/1

Outstanding Irish jockey Billy Lee has three cracking rides booked for today, including this three-year-old Wootton Bassett colt trained by Paddy Twomey in County Tipperary.

Carmers has had just two runs to date, both last month, winning at Ballinrobe and Navan over 1m 5f. Today's trip then of a mere 220 yards extra should pose no problems and the horse has any amount of improvement to come in all likelihood as he powered clear on the last occasion (a Listed heat), with the third home that day subsequently winning a nice Fairyhouse maiden.

He's in the Irish St Leger in the autumn and though his sire was a speed machine there's some welcome Sea The Stars stamina influence on the dam's side.

Fascinating clash, and we're paying four places each-way.

15:40 (Duke of Cambridge) - Fallen Angel @ 11/4

Another to race in the increasingly familiar colours of Wathnan Racing, owned by the Emir of Qatar.

Fallen Angel is a four-year-old filly by Too Darn Hot, and is trained by the all-conquering Karl Burke. Retained Wathnan jockey James Doyle has the riding assignment.

After a 223-day break Fallen Angel reappeared at Newbury in what turned out to be a red-hot G1 Lockinge, and was beaten by 5.75l. She made the running, relatively unconsidered at 20/1, and unsurprisingly faded late in the piece.

For a pipe-opener for this, down a step to G2, it could hardly have been better. In these slightly less rarefied waters, and for a yard boasting a 20% strike-rate over the last 14 days, it can be another story altogether over this mile trip on the round course.

Won the Irish 1000 Guineas last term and for me has an outstanding chance. Each-way, we're paying three places.

17:00 (Hunt Cup) - Fox Legacy @ 10/1

A tremendous betting race historically, and we're paying SIX places each-way. A big field of high-quality handicappers chasing a winning purse of around £90k.

My selection Fox Legacy races in the famous King Power silks, is trained by Andrew Balding (25% strike-rate), and will be ridden by Oisin Murphy (33%!!).

White-hot connections then behind this four-year-old Lope De Vega gelding and his form is very encouraging coming in to this, too - joined Andrew from the retired Sir Michael Stoute's yard in April, then the following month won a huge pot at HQ in this grade, with authority, off a mark of 90.

To win here another career-best is required, off 6lbs higher, but he's most certainly on the up and as he readily gets a little further than this mile he'll be hopefully hitting the line powerfully when some of the others are beginning to wilt.

18:10 (Windsor Castle) - Havana Hurricane @ 11/1

Two-year-olds hurtle down the 5f course - around 24 of them are scheduled to do so as I write. Thrilling, blink and you'll miss it cavalry-charge material!

My selection Havana Hurricane is a Havana Gold colt out of an Excelebration mare. She tidily took a Goodwood novice in May at this minimum trip before stepping up to 6f at Epsom 12 days ago, finishing an excellent second to Maximised after travelling beautifully for most of the trip.

Dropping down a furlong is seen as very much a good thing here and she's been tested in battle - it was a Conditions contest last time for a £39k pot and she looks well worth a tilt at this Listed prize.

Eve Johnson Houghton trains, and Charles Bishop is on top. Expect a late challenge, after hopefully a smooth passage - fingers crossed.

We're paying four places each-way in this one.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.25p each-way Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £1,515 for your total £7.50 stake.
