Nap of the Day: Greenall & Guerriero’s Gentleman is top of the Bill

Nap of the day with owen mcmahon

If you only back the Nap of the Day on Saturdays, you've had a fruitful few weeks. The last three have all obliged at odds of 11/8, 2/1 and 3/1.

Hopefully this novice chaser who looks to be on a handy mark can keep the run going at Haydock on a busy day across the UK & Ireland.

I'll be at Haydock on Saturday for the Betfair Chase meeting, hopefully cheering GENTLEMAN BILL into the winners' enclosure after the second race.

Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero's seven-year-old made a highly-encouraging debut over fences at Aintree just under four weeks ago and the Rule Of Law gelding is tipped to open his account at the second time of asking in this 0-130 handicap over an extended two miles.

He was third in Liverpool, just over three lengths behind Anthony Honeyball's Jordans Cross, who I thought was booked for victory in a competitive handicap at Cheltenham's November Meeting off six pounds higher before departing at the last. The runner-up at Aintree, Spadestep, looks a smart type for Lucinda Russell & Michael Scudamore too.

On that evidence, Gentleman Bill promises to be a significantly better chaser than he was a hurdler.

And he was a decent hurdler. His beating of I'm A Lumberjack, winner of two of his next four starts, at Bangor around this time last year is a solid piece of form - as is his second to the 137-rated Jarrive De Mee for Willie Mullins, who went on to finish fourth in the Grade 1 over three miles at the Punchestown Festival, at Catterick in the new year.

I suspect we'll be looking at a 130+ chaser by the end of the season, so Gentleman Bill makes plenty of appeal off his current mark of 123.

To be honest, if he improves anywhere near as much as he did last season for his reappearance, it's not a ridiculous suggestion that he could perform close to that figure on Saturday.

According to the betting, it's Escapeandevade and David's Well that are the main dangers.

The former showed up well on reappearance at Worcester last month, but he's been raised three pounds for a two-length defeat. That seems very harsh. The nine-year-old is also winless in over 18 months.

I'd be more concerned about David's Well for the Gordons. He's got a 330-day layoff to overcome, but looked well ahead of his mark when last seen and remains open to improvement.

Sunnyvilla is on a career-high mark at 10 years old and is another lacking a recent run, while I find the other three - namely Netywell, Miralago and Cossack Chach - difficult to advise.

I make Gentleman Bill a 15/8 shot in this company, so he rates an outstanding bet at current prices.
