Nap of the day with owen mcmahon 2

There are three meetings scheduled in Britain on Sunday as well as group-race action coming from the Curragh, where Aidan O’Brien is unsurprisingly mob-handed.

However, the Nap of the Day comes from Ffos Las, where soft ground is forecast and the testing conditions are expected to be in the favour of a David Menuisier juvenile.

The Ed Walker-trained Astrazar is likely to head the betting in this seven-furlong maiden contest and the son of Starman clearly sets the standard with an official rating of 84.

Astrazar was fourth in a competitive sales race at York 38 days ago, which is a stand out piece of form behind Song Of The Clyde, but he is now a five-race maiden and a step up in trip to seven furlongs on testing ground is not guaranteed to suit.

While Walker’s charge could be floundering late on, Lavender Gold should be staying on stoutly and can shed the maiden tag at the third time of asking.

David Menuisier’s charge improved dramatically from run one to two, having finished a never nearer seventh in a hot maiden at York on debut before a third-placed effort in a mile maiden on soft ground at Windsor.

The Victor Ludorum colt finished his race out strongly that day, so soft ground over seven furlongs at Ffos Las looks ideal, and the form has worked out well with eventual winner Explosion having since bolted up on handicap debut off a mark of 79.

That seven-length win has seen Explosion hiked to a rating of 87 and Lavender Gold was only four lengths behind that winner and running on, suggesting that he doesn’t have too much to find with the likely favourite Astrazar.

With another step forward expected and conditions set to suit, Lavender Gold looks primed to make his breakthrough and the yard’s horses continue to be in excellent form.

The once-raced Nicely Timed, hailing from the powerful Ralph Beckett stable, deserves an honourable mention but a big step forward is required from his initial effort, while newcomer

Phantom Shadow has a good pedigree despite Harry Charlton’s debutants tending to improve for a run.
