Nap of the Day: Progressive mare can land spoils for Willie Mullins

Nap of the day generic

There are three cards in Britain and Ireland for punters to peruse on Sunday and we have a host of interesting action. Gordon Elliott has won nine of the last ten runnings of the Listed bumper (15:35) that brings Navan's card to a close, including victories with subsequent Champion Bumper winners Sir Gerhard and Envoi Allen in recent years. He fields two here.

Meanwhile in Britain we have a competitive-looking Pertemps qualifier (13:40) to solve at Carlisle and a seven-race card at Southwell to enjoy. The meeting at Navan is where we have focused our attention, though, as a progressive mare catches the eye in a 2m handicap chase (13:50).

13:50 Navan - May Call You Back @ 2/1

Navan is a happy hunting ground for Britain and Ireland's champion jumps trainer Willie Mullins, who has saddled six winners from 19 runners at the track this season (36% strike-rate), and there is every chance he can enhance that fine record.

It's interesting that Mullins has just one representative on Sunday. That is May Call You Back, who lines up in the 2m handicap chase (13:50).

The seven-year-old failed to get within less than 29 lengths in eight starts for Steve Jones, but the switch to Mullins in June seems to have worked the oracle as she has won five of last her eight starts while mixing hurdling with chasing.

She returned from a break in October to win a Tramore handicap chase, doing well to come out on top in a bobbing finish despite looking as though she would improve for the run, and the second gave substance to the form when beaten a short head next time.

May Call You Back then took advantage of a 1lb lower mark back over hurdles at Gowran Park last time, pulling almost 12 lengths clear of a subsequent winner with one who was beaten just half a length off a 4lb higher mark.

She was value for more than the three-quarter-length winning margin suggests, too, while it also proved she acted on a testing surface, given her other wins had been achieved on a surface described as good to yielding or yielding.

She drops back in trip now back chasing and that could be a shrewd move, given she's unbeaten in three starts at around two miles over fences but has not won on either of her two starts over further.

Brian Hayes, who has been on board for every start since the switch to Mullins, is in good form, having ridden two winners from his last three rides, while the fitting of a first-time hood could bring about even more improvement.
