NAP of the Day: Or should I say night?

Nap of the day with owen mcmahon

Patience is required on Saturday, as NAP of the Day backers are asked to wait until just shy of 9pm. Hopefully it proves worthwhile.

The selection is a well-bred, well-connected handicap debutant in a 10-runner race at Salisbury that looks there for the taking.

There's 59 races on Saturday and the NAP comes in the very last one. Sorry...

I'm hopeful it'll be worth the wait, though, for there's lots to like about SHAYHANA's chances in the 20:45 Salisbury - a 0-80 handicap over 1m4f.

Owen Burrows' four-year-old daughter of Frankel, who sports the blue and white silks of Shadwell Stud, is out of an Invincible Spirit mare called Tatweej - a half-sister to St James's Palace, Lockinge and Queen Anne winner Palace Pier.

The beautifully-bred filly made her belated debut at three, in a Class 5 maiden at Lingfield over this intermediate trip in November, finishing runner-up to John & Thady Gosden's 87-rated Marnier by just under five lengths.

Clearly inferior on the day, but she stuck to her job nicely in the final couple of furlongs. A performance not without encouragement.

According to her trainer in a stable tour with RacingTV, she was set to be sent to stud, but Betfred 2000 Guineas-winning jockey Billy Loughnane, who was on board in Surrey, spoke highly enough about her to convince him to give her another season.

That already looks a wise decision after her return from 174 days off the track at Wolverhampton last month, recording a gutsy victory over a fine yardstick of Andrew Balding's.

Shayhana was giving a stone and six pounds to Littlecote, rated 75, who gave the form a boost at Newcastle earlier this week. She's likely to be around the 78 mark, if not higher, once reassessed.

On that evidence, Shayhana's opening mark of 76 looks rather lenient. It's no surprise connections waste zero time in putting her into handicap company.

There could be any amount of improvement to come and if she's streetwise enough, I can see her taking a bit of beating in this under Daniel Muscutt.
