Nap of the day with owen mcmahon

It's been a fruitful couple of weeks for backers of my Nap of the Day selections, courtesy of seven winners from nine - including the last five in a row.

Saturday's fancy was a non-runner, but he reappears at Yarmouth on Tuesday and gets another confident vote.

Doncaster's loss is Yarmouth's gain in regards to NOVA CENTAURI.

John & Thady Gosden's two-year-old was due to run at the Betfred St Leger Festival on Saturday - and I fancied him strongly too - but he was withdrawn on account of the soft ground.

Similar conditions are expected on the East Coast on Tuesday, but if the forecast is right it's going to be largely, if not completely dry over the next 24 hours or so, therefore it shouldn't be quite as bad.

Hopefully the selection gets the green light this time, for I'm very keen to support him again.

The son of American miler Not This Time, a Group 3 winner who finished runner-up in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, was third on his racecourse debut in a strong-looking novice event at Newbury last month.

It was Andrew Balding's Venetian Prince, sent off 6/5f, who obliged in Berkshire. He showed encouragement on his debut prior and is out of the outstanding broodmare Arabian Queen, also responsible for the likes of See The Fire, Royal Playwright and Spirit Mixer, so he's in all likelihood a very nice prospect.

Runner-up was Wechaad, for Roger Varian, who made a mockery of an opening mark of 82 by running away with a handicap on Town Moor last week - landing a 13/2 touch for Betfred Insights readers in the process.

I would argue the selection was actually the one to take out of that race at Newbury, too. He was a bit keen out of the stalls and showed signs of greenness when asked a question by jockey Robert Havlin. Once the penny dropped, he finished very strongly, closing on the front two with every stride.

He shaped as if he'd improve significantly for the step up to a mile, which he gets at Yarmouth, and James Doyle taking over in the saddle is no negative. There ought to be lots more to come from this one.

The selection's main danger is Spyce, without a doubt. Alan King's Too Darn Hot colt caught the eye when a superb second in the £51k Convival Maiden at York's Ebor Festival on debut and open to any amount of improvement.

That form offers mixed messages, though, and ultimately he was allowed to go off 28/1. That always puts me off ever-so-slightly.

Spyce aside, I think it's very much Nova Centauri's race to lose.
