Owen McMahon's NAP of the Day

On an extremely busy Thursday featuring 47 races across seven meetings, we go to Yarmouth for the NAP of the Day.

The in-form Simon & Ed Crisford send just one runner to the East Coast, and she rates my best bet.

NAP of the Day - Thursday, July 4

  • 15:30 Yarmouth - Eighth Avenue @ 2/1

By the time this article goes live, I suspect John & Thady Gosden's Glistening will top the 15:30 Yarmouth Odds.

She's by Frankel and out of a Group 2-winning mare which, on top of donning those famous pink, green and white silks of Juddmonte Stud, makes her a highly-attractive type on paper.

However, I'm a firm believer in opposing such sorts on their first day of school - and it's worth noting that the Gosdens are yet to train a two-year-old winner this season.

Instead, I think there's more value in backing EIGHTH AVENUE to win the fillies' maiden over seven furlongs.

The daughter of Starspangledbanner, who fetched 240,000gns at the sales in October last year, has a valuable fitness and experience edge over her main market rival having placed in a similar affair at Kempton's all-weather track last month.

It's too early to tell if that form is any good, but the King Power-owned, Sir Michael Stoute-trained winner is bred in the purple and was supported on the day, and the selection pulled over two lengths clear of him and the runner-up.

On visual evidence alone, I thought it was a very promising start to her career. Despite obvious greenness, she was only narrowly beaten at the finish and I expect a good amount of improvement to follow.

It's also worth noting that the Crisfords weren't in the best form at the time. However, as I mentioned in the intro, they're in significantly better nick at present, operating at a 27% strike rate courtesy of three winners from 11 runners in the last fortnight.

I'm very hopeful the selection can get the better of her five rivals who also have form already in the book, while I'm prepared to take a chance that the aforementioned Glistening and fellow debutant El Fox for Marco Botti are going to need the run and/or experience.
