Nap of the day with alan firkins 2

We're on a hat-trick. Whirl sluiced up, quite literally, at the Goodwood lido yesterday after Lady Iman had done similar in rather more clement conditions on Wednesday.

In our bid for the Nap Of The Day three-timer I'm popping off to HQ to support an improver from a fine yard that's looking to defy a penalty. I'm very hopeful that he can do just that.

18:55 Newmarket - Walson's Law @ 5/2

The combination of trainer Eve Johnson Houghton and jockey Charles Bishop struck the other day at Goodwood with Great Acclaim - and leave the glorious festival before returning on Saturday to run this four-year-old Wootton Bassett gelding at Newmarket on Friday night, bidding to defy a penalty.

Walson's Law scored decisively at Newbury no less at this grade/trip 29 days ago, off a mark of 78. He didn't have the clearest of passages but then 'whoosh' - it was all over for a cosy success.

The assessor was impressed, raising him 7lb to 85, and in fact it was his second win in just three starts under Eve's stewardship (she received the horse in May from George Boughey), and he seems to be really thriving.

The manner of that Newbury success suggests to me that it's not a forlorn hope that the penalty can be handled, and it doesn't look the strongest of heats for the Class 4 grade.

Perfectly happy to side with this one for our hat-trick bid, whilst evidently in such great nick. Lady Cobham is the relatively new owner of the horse and he's entered up in the Clipper at the Ebor Festival.

I'm guessing he'd need to win this to be further penalised and have any chance of getting into that - but in any event it's a bold statement of intent from connections and is encouraging that they see the horse potentially in that kind of company.

The Class 2 heat on August 21 on the Knavesmire is worth around £70k to the winner, and the competition is sure to be white-hot. This Newmarket contest meanwhile looks far more do-able, and it's fingers crossed all round in our three-timer quest.
