Lucky 15 Tips: Aintree Specialist to make easy work of his elders

Jumps action takes over on Sunday with Irish Jumps meetings from Wexford and Galway as well as Aintree and Fontwell meeting domestically.

We have four selections for a Lucky 15 on Sunday including three from the feature meeting of the day and there’s a course specialist that looks capable of a big run back over the Mildmay fences.

12.40 Aintree - Pounding Poet @ 9/2

A good up and coming jockey can be worth their weight in gold in races confined to conditional riders and one that has made a really bright start to their career is Cameron Iles who has an impressive 19 percent strike-rate in his career to date.

He takes the ride on board Pounding Poet in Aintree’s opener. This son of Yeats got a fifth hurdle win on the board at Uttoxeter on his penultimate outing and was only just touched off by a head at Cartmel subsequently, meeting some trouble in-running at a crucial stage.

A 3lb rise for that latest effort looks on the lenient side and a return to Aintree will also be in his favour having hit the crossbar on three of his four previous visits to Liverpool.

There’s rain forecast at Aintree on both Saturday and Sunday so we can expect soft to appear somewhere in the going description and a lot of his rivals are summer horses that will want conditions quicker than they’re going to be on Sunday, including the outright favourite.

Iles can still claim 3lb in conditional rider only races so that helps negate the rise in the weights for his second at Cartmel and Tom Lacey is a trainer in form, running at a near 30 percent strike-rate in recent weeks.

13.40 Wexford - 13.40 Wexford - Parnell Street @ 10/3    

Experience is often a key factor in maiden hurdles and Parnell Street has an advantage in that area in the two mile maiden hurdle at Wexford.

He’s already won a bumper and ran a cracker in defeat in that sphere last time.

He should go well if he takes to hurdling and he’s versatile with regards to conditions, which could be key with an unsettled forecast.

13.50 Aintree - Ashtown Lad @ 5/1   

David O’Meara doesn’t train many jumpers but he has a good strike-rate with the ones he does have and he got a win out of Ashtown Lad at Kelso earlier this month.

There’s a suspicion this race will turn into a real stamina test and that will suit 2022’s Becher Chase winner, who stays further than this trip.

He’s still chucked in old form from a handicapping perspective and can outrun his odds with just a 3lb rise to cope with.

14:55 Aintree - Imperial Saint @ 6/4    

Imperial Saint has a superb record at Aintree over the Mildmay fences with form figures of 1112 and he looks a lot more progressive than the remainder of his rivals in Aintree’s Old Roan Chase on Sunday.

He made a really bright start to his chasing career last season and while he lacks a recent run, he won on his seasonal reappearance last season and none of his rivals have been out so far this term..

There’s surely more to come from this lightly-raced seven year old and he looks capable of defying a mark of 144.
