Lucky 15 Tips: Chester you say? Be Roodee not to

Tuesday 5th May 2026, 17:58

It's Chester's May meeting, Day 1. The first five races are being covered LIVE by ITV, so what a brilliant vehicle for our Lucky 15 tips. We've got a Group 3 contest and a Listed heat to look forward to, and it all kicks in on the historic Roodee at 13:30.

There's been organised horse racing on this site since 1539 (according to some sources it even goes as far back as 1512!), and it's commonly regarded as the oldest such venue for the sport in the world.

Enjoy!

13:30 - Final Appeal @ 5/2

The Lily Agnes - a 5f sprint test for 'early' two-year-olds.

All but one has had at least an outing, with three having run twice. Experience is so important at this tender age, especially on this tight, twisting terrain that demands plenty of natural speed, bravery and athleticism.

We're siding with a Karl Burke entry, reasonably drawn in the four box, and having so far a debut neck second and an all-the-way all-weather success, both at this minimum trip, to his name.

Final Appeal is a son of Inns Of Court, a G2 winner at this trip, and the yard are ticking along at around a 21% strike-rate over the last 14 days. Stable jockey Cliff Lee has the riding assignment, and the horse has an early entry into Newbury's richly-endowed Super Sprint, in July.

14:05 - Supido @ 15/2

2000 Guineas hero Billy Loughnane is reunited with one of the trainers who has certainly helped in his meteoric rise; Worcestershire-based dual-purpose handler Ian Williams.

The pair have enjoyed many successes and appear in tandem once again in this 7.5f Class 2 handicap, for older horses. Supido sounds like a Phil Collins hit, or an exclamation from the weather lady in The Fast Show - but is in fact a four-year-old Blue Point gelding with two wins from 12 starts thus far.

Ian acquired the horse from France 13 months ago and has yet to increase that win tally, achieved with former custodian Philippe Decouz. Things haven't quite fallen into place for him yet but I'm sure it will sooner rather than later - ideally on Wednesday afternoon.

14:35 - Amelia Earhart @ 2/1

Time for Listed action, and a famous prize for three-year-old fillies - the Cheshire Oaks.

Team Gosden field a likely hotpot in I'm The One but she's only run once (admittedly a fine winning effort in a Newbury maiden, by 6l). I'm opposing with a hugely more experienced young lady in Amelia Earhart, a daughter of Guineas and dual Derby winner Camelot.

She hails from Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle base and when last seen at Leopardstown in October took a maiden herself by 7l, which she was entitled to after finishing a 4.75l fourth in a Curragh G3 as the 3/1 fav, in her previous run.

She's not tackled anything in excess of a mile so far and gets very nearly the Classic trip of 12f today bar about 145 yards. On breeding alone this could bring about tremendous improvement, and I'm hoping that's exactly the case.

The yard do brilliantly at this meeting and a certain Minnie Hauk took this very race for the team last term. Amelia Earhart is already a single-figure price for the Betfred Oaks (8/1) and that could be under pressure at around 14:40.

15:40 - Alaminos @ 9/4

A 6f Class 3 handicap for three-year-olds to wrap up our Lucky 15, and a selection from the powerful yard of Kevin Ryan.

Alaminos is a Pinatubo colt, and we recall with interest what a flying machine he was. The selection has raced three times to date, a Thirsk maiden win in August on debut, a less convincing effort ensued at Haydock the following month, then on seasonal reappearance 15 days ago at Pontefract a very pleasing neck second off a mark of 82.

It's not been lost on the assessor, as he/she has put the horse up 3lb for his efforts; but it represented a huge step forward on those two-year-old runs and as such is entirely warranted.

He sports the famous colours of our Betfred 2000 Guineas winner Bow Echo, and will be ridden by Kevin Stott, the only jockey so far to have ridden the horse in public.

If all four of our selections won, today's notional 50p win Lucky 15, at the prices indicated (they can of course fluctuate), would return around £360 for a £7.50 total stake. If you can improve upon our selections (of course you can) - then go for it!
