Thursday 23rd July 2026, 18:22

It's mainly all about Ascot as we reach the end of the week, certainly on Saturday anyway (King George day), but there's a cracking meeting in Berkshire on Friday too that kicks in at 14:20.

Six races, lots of the top boys and girls in action, and an ideal vehicle for our Lucky 15 tips. Enjoy!

14:20 Ascot - Speed Of Sound @ 7/2

Novice two-year-old fillies go 6f.

Not much to go on form-wise but some nice pedigrees and good yards are represented in this. My hope is that the daughter of Sioux Nation Speed Of Sound, out of a Camacho mare, will be good enough after one very promising run thus far.

That was at Newmarket two weeks ago under today's pilot Saffie Osborne, and she has a handful of very tasty entries - the Lowther and the big sales race at York's Ebor meeting next month, and two more big sales events at Donny and Redcar as summer becomes autumn.

Richard Spencer trains, and the filly runs in the familiar colours of Phil Cunningham. Smashing race, decent shout.

14:55 Ascot - Alfred Wallace @ 7/2

Listed race for two-year-olds, over 7f.

Our selection Alfred Wallace is a Dubawi colt out of a Frankel mare, trained at HQ by Ed Walker. He's reached out to Oisin Murphy to ride, for the first time, and this will be start number five.

Second time of asking he obliged in a decent £10k Thirsk novice and then has been very highly tried at the royal meeting, and Newmarket's July gathering (Windsor Castle and Superlative Stakes respectively).

That latter engagement, a G2 no less, was 13 days go and he only went down by 4l. He's down in class here, gets Murphy, and I'm very keen on his prospects.

15:30 Ascot - Fireblade @ 10/3

A 2m, Class 3 handicap for three-year-olds and above.

We celebrate in the race title a great Ascot staying machine in Brown Jack, multiple winner of the Queen Alexandra Stakes and who even managed to squeeze in a Champion Hurdle, too (plus an Ebor, Chester Cup, Goodwood Cup, and a Doncaster Cup. No words!)

This renewal has attracted only four runners but they'll all have their admirers. My pick is a course-and-distance scorer trained by Dylan Cunha at HQ, namely Fireblade.

He's a five-year-old gelding by Frankel out of a Pivotal mare, and has registered two wins so far from 18 starts. His last was here at two furlongs short of this trip, 13 days ago, and he failed by just half-a-length.

Callum Rodriguez was on board then, and retains the ride today. We know he stays this far, and surely has a huge chance.

16:05 Ascot - Al Azd @ 11/8

Class 2 handicap now over 12f, for three-year-olds and above.

We're sporting the legendary Nashwan/Shadwell Estates silks here with Roger Varian's Al Azd. He's a three-year-old Dubawi gelding out of a Tamayuz mare who's scored twice in nine attempts.

Nicely progressive profile, and was a tremendous half-length second of 19 in the King George V Stakes at the royal meeting 36 days ago. That was off a mark of 92 and he's up to 100 this afternoon, but that's been the direction of travel of late and he's up to taking this for red-hot jock Ray Dawson, who has ridden him a couple of times before.

If all four of our selections won, today's notional 50p win Lucky 15, at the prices indicated (they can of course fluctuate), would return around £270 for a £7.50 total stake. If you can improve upon our selections (of course you can) - then go for it!
