Lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

There's an attractive spread of racing on Friday with pretty much something for everyone. We're heading to Ascot, and their impressive-looking six-race programme that kicks in at 12:40.

Hope you're beginning to get some Festive vibes, and by this time next week we'll be drinking in the King George and all manner of delights on both sides of the Irish Sea. Can't wait would be a considerable understatement ... and in the meantime, here's our latest Lucky 15 tips.

Fast Racing Results

13:15 - Gaelic Pride @ 5/1

Plenty of nice types contest this 2m 5½f novice hurdle, with some big improvers doubtless lurking, waiting to explode!

My selection is a five-year-old gelding trained by Warren Greatrex in Upper Lambourn - Gaelic Pride. Four runs so far under rules, winning on debut at Fontwell (bumper) before finding a similar contest at Aintree a little taxing.

He was sent hurdling on seasonal reappearance back at Fontwell in October (fine second to one that won next time), then 33 days ago at Cheltenham no less he was beaten just half-a-length in a field of 14 by a useful Team Skelton inmate.

Could be time to step up for jockey Caoilin Quinn, on board for the first time with recent pilot James Bowen claimed for his brother's Off The Jury; another with an obvious chance.

13:50 - Stencil @ 7/2

What a sight - Harry Cobden in the green-and-gold JP McManus hoops.

He was on board when the four-year-old Masar gelding Stencil made his chase debut at Cheltenham in mid-November, running a bit free early doors and not really getting home.

French-based duo Noel George & Amanda Zetterholm train this one and it seems JP acquired him after winning a nice hurdle on debut at Compiegne 18 months ago. He's not set any pulses racing so far but Harry's presence, those Istabraq silks, and the fact that he's been sent chasing pretty swiftly gives me the impression that he might just eventually be smart, fingers crossed.

15:00 - No Questions Asked @ 6/4

Another novice chase - a belter - featuring a course-and-distance scorer with a progressive profile.

Ben Pauling's No Questions Asked has had two runs over the larger obstacles, was rated 136 over hurdles, but already has outstripped that over fences (144).

Won his first chase here in early November before finishing a good second, beaten 2l, in the G2 John Francome at Newbury. He's got at least two formidable-looking opponents in Steel Ally and Jax Junior but I wouldn't swap.

Ben Jones gets on well with the seven-year-old gelding and has in my book a great chance.

15:35 - Bass Hunter @ 13/8

The last is a bumper, with plenty of runners hailing from extremely potent addresses.

I'm going for one of the more experienced entries in Chris Gordon's five-year-old gelded son of Epsom Derby hero Authorized - Bass Hunter. Three points, including a win in the last of them, was followed by a Newbury bumper success when last seen 43 days ago, scoring readily by 8l.

Trainer's son Freddie, on board for that success, is again doing the pushing and I think we can safely say he's potentially smart. Any number of dangers in a superb finale, but for me he's looked like one to follow and I hope I'm right.

If all four of our selections won, today's notional 50p win Lucky 15, at the prices indicated (they can of course fluctuate), would return around £260 for a £7.50 total stake.
