Lucky 15 Tips: Hard to keep the Bowens down

Ludlow stages a seven-race card on Wednesday that commences at 14:00 - an ideal vehicle for our midweek Lucky 15 tips.

Jonjo Jr is here, Charlie Deutsch, Sam Twiston-Davies, James Bowen - should be a cracker. Just the one winner yesterday, but at a lovely advised price of 11/2 if you secured it.

14:33 - Misterdoc @ 1/1

It doesn't take much in the way of persuasion or temptation to end up siding with a Dan Skelton-trained inmate in a little midweek novice, and his recent recruit from France should take all the beating here.

Misterdoc joined the Warwickshire powerhouse yard last month, and 22 days ago had a first outing for new connections - a very promising Chepstow fourth, beaten 4.25l.

Held up, the four-year-old gelding by top French chaser Goliath Du Berlais finished nicely on the heels of the principals under Harry Skelton and will know more about what's required today.

The excellent Tristan Durrell is in the plate as Harry is at Southwell, and the stable conditional is having a great season with 36 winners thus far. The horse has an early closing entry in the Fred Winter at the Festival and as a mere four-year-old has a lovely racing weight today of just 10st 4lb.

16:05 - Diamonds Galore @ 7/4

Handicap hurdlers now, and a selection trained by the great Nicky Henderson in Upper Lambourn.

The Seven Barrows team run Diamonds Galore, a six-year-old mare, and it's significant to me that she returns to Ludlow having run well here 63 days ago when last seen, just before Christmas.

She finished second beaten 4.5l to a Ben Pauling horse that very nearly then followed up at Warwick in a 16-runner novice (beaten a length), and it was 5.5l back to the third.

Prior to that in October she ran another fine race at Worcester, 1.25l only adrift at the finish behind a Bowen/Murphy winner, so to me at least her chance is undeniable.

Last time was a career-high, and she should be tough to contain.

16:35 - Falco Des Pins @ 11/8

Trainer Venetia Williams has had a few winners of late but hasn't really clicked as she so often does around this time of the season, firing in winners from all over the place on the prevailing soft ground.

There's still time, but in any event her six-year-old gelding Falco Des Pins, by Goodwood Celebration Mile winner Muhtathir, firmly enters calculations for this 2m handicap chase.

Venetia acquired the horse in November 2024, and it's only run six times for new connections. There's been one sizeable break, and a wind procedure in December last, too.

Just 15 days ago the horse had his first start since that intervention and ran well, beaten 7.5l after leading and fading late. With that run under his belt he deserves a change of fortune and he's down to a very attractive mark of just 90 this afternoon.

The superb Charlie Deutsch has the riding assignment as one would expect with one of Venetia's, and his rivals look pretty exposed. Looks a good opportunity, and the patience shown by all could be rewarded today. Still only a six-year-old, don't forget.

17:05 - Fresh Kicks @ 9/4

We're with Messrs Henderson and James Bowen once again, this time a six-year-old gelding that has one win over hurdles from four starts over timber, that being a Plumpton maiden in December (by an easy 6l).

Since then Fresh Kicks has been quite highly tried in two subsequent efforts, at Ascot and Windsor, in warm-looking handicaps. The water looks far calmer here, and though he has to shoulder 12st his mark has been lowered 3lb by the assessor and a total of 4lb since his handicap debut.

He's conceding weight to theoretically inferior horses and I can envisage a nice confidence-boosting spin for this £4k+ first prize, en route to hopefully bigger and better things.
