15:42 - Maltese Cross @ 9/4

A 10f novice stakes heat for three-year-olds, with some top yards represented.

Our selection is a Sea The Stars colt out of a Camelot mare who has shown a very pleasing level of ability in his two racecourse appearances so far.

Trained at Newmarket by William Haggas, Maltese Cross debuted at Ascot in September, failing by just a neck to break his maiden. In an improved display he put that right later in the month at HQ by a head - both races being over one mile.

On breeding he's sure to get today's 10f and he's entered up in next month's Dante at York at around this trip, and also the Betfred Derby, over 12f - a race his sire famously captured back in 2009.

William enjoyed success this week at Newmarket, with today's pilot Tom Marquand doing the steering, and the 4lb winner's penalty Maltese Cross carries shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience.

This is the time to dream. He could be anything at this point; and all is about to be revealed.

16:20 - Caprelo @ 4/1

We're with 'Aussie' Tom Marquand again for this staying handicap, over 2m-and-change.

Caprelo is a five-year-old gelded son of Ulysses, and is trained by Hughie Morrison at East Ilsley in Berkshire. Marquand has ridden him once before, and some stellar names have also had the pleasure previously - Oisin Murphy, Dave Probert, Billy Loughnane, Rossa Ryan and Hollie Doyle among them.

Held in high regard then I'd say, by connections - and he's a very consistent performer. Three wins from 16 starts and four placed efforts confirm the view, and when last seen in early December on the all-weather at Kempton he was a close-up second in a class slightly above this, same trip.

Fair to say he bombed in the Cesarewitch prior to that, the only really poor run of his life, and a combination of 2m 2f and Newmarket's contours evidently didn't suit.

He ended the season performing as well as ever and his mark today of 82 reflects that. Tends to be held up for a late challenge. Every chance.

16:55 - Colori Forever @ 4/1

Marco Ghiani rides this three-year-old Bated Breath colt for trainer Marco Botti, looking for win number three in what will be his fifth start.

This is A 7f Class 2 handicap, and Colori Forever lines up fresh from an emphatic win at Southwell 12 days ago at this trip, by 5l. That was a Class 4 contest so he's up markedly this afternoon, and penalised 6lb.

However, it was a big career-high performance, showed he'd trained on, and reinforced the positive impression given by his three runs at two, which included a debut win at Yarmouth at this trip.

Might be slightly better than this mark and the fitness edge could be key.

17:25 - Addison Grey @ 11/2

The closer is a big-field, 6f Class 3 sprint handicap.

Mightily competitive, of course, but fairly local Lambourn trainer Clive Cox is often deadly here at Newbury and especially when jockeys of the calibre of Rossa Ryan are engaged.

Our hope Addison Grey has three wins from six starts, and the four-year-old Havana Grey gelding won on debut under this very jockey at Southwell 18 months ago.

Hasn't been seen since September but returns having been gelded, which often brings improvement in its wake, and off a mark of 92 (he was fourth off 93 in that last spin, beaten 4.5l in a Class 2, never quite getting on terms).

I've a feeling he'll be ready for this, and I like his chances very much.

If all four of our selections won, today's notional 50p win Lucky 15, at the prices indicated (they can of course fluctuate), would return around £570 for a £7.50 total stake. If you can improve upon our selections (of course you can) - then go for it!
