Catterick races

Welcome to a new racing week, dear reader. It will culminate in the Betfred St Leger Festival at Doncaster, Thursday-Sunday inclusive - four days of high-class racing, entertainment, and of course the running of the world's oldest Classic.

In the meantime let's take in a Catterick gathering on Tuesday - seven contests kicking in at 14:10. Here are our Lucky 15 Tips, for your perusal.

Lucky 15 Tips - Tuesday, September 9

Catterick

  • 15:10 - Maasai Mata @ 3/1
  • 16:10 - Crocodile Power @ 15/8
  • 16:40 - Our Nicola @ 15/2
  • 17:10 - Filey Beach @ 7/2

15:10 - Maasai Mata @ 3/1

The Nicholls family are synonymous with sprinters - the late David 'Dandy' rode then trained some absolute crackers including the fabled G1 racemare Soba, and son Adrian has carried on the tradition after taking up a licence when his own riding days were done.

Now his children are riding winners, and Maasai Mata has one of them, Jack, in the saddle on Tuesday. The selection is a two-year-old filly by Massaat who is looking still to register success number one after seven starts.

She's definitely shown ability though, particularly 26 days ago when last seen, at Beverley. She failed by just 0.75l on that day and her mark of 54 remains the same. Great chance, and nicely drawn in the one box.

16:10 - Crocodile Power @ 15/8

Experienced seven-year-old Slade Power gelding trained by Seb Spencer at Malton, and ridden by 7lb claimer Shay Farmer.

Crocodile Power is six-from-41 all told, and is a course-and-distance scorer here at Catterick. He's in great form at the minute without quite being able to get his head in front, as evidenced by his last run 48 days ago.

In a very similar race to this he was denied by just 0.75l to a rival who two runs later went in again off a 7lb higher mark. Shay's claim today helps to offset the inevitable rise in the handicap this consistency has led to (he's now off 64), but the fact that that's a a career-high confirms the great nick he's in right now.

16:40 - Our Nicola @ 15/2

7f is the trip, three-year-old filly, in the care of trainer David and Nicola Barron.

David's another northern training legend and his Our Nicola is another searching for a first success after six attempts to date. I like her weight in this - 8st 9lb - and encouragingly her last run was just about her best.

At Musselburgh 14 days ago she was in the thick of it throughout and only gave best late in the piece, going down by 2.25l. Jockey Jo Mason is on board for the first time, and ridden perhaps a little more conservatively she can get this one home.

Down a pound in the handicap, and as I said, a lovely racing weight in the context of this.

17:10 - Filey Beach @ 7/2

Ah, memories of holidays gone by. Charming little resort, marvellous part of the world - and only about 70 miles away from the track.

The equine Filey Beach is a four-year-old Profitable gelding in the hands of Ruth Carr - grand-daughter of David Chapman, who trained the legendary Soba, mentioned earlier. Another great Yorkshire racing dynasty.

Filey Beach is looking to defy a 6lb penalty for winning here 13 days ago but is in great form - last time was just about a best-ever effort.

Jo Mason could be in for an exciting hour or so as she's once again doing the steering, and I'm encouraged that connections haven't reached out for a claimer; presumably thinking the horse is capable of defying the assessor and happy to engage a fine horsewoman like Jo.

Fascinating little bargain basement 7f Class 6 handicap, and being drawn four of a likely 12 runners isn't the worst by any means.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £500 for your total £7.50 stake.
