Lucky 15 Tips: Mind the Star at Gowran Park

There are three meetings in the UK and Ireland on Sunday as the month of August runs out. Jumps action is from Worcester, while they line up on the Flat at Brighton and Tipperary, with Group-race action from Ireland.

14:35 Chepstow - Zabeel Flower @ 8/15

The Richard Hughes-trained ZABEEL FLOWER ran to a good level when touched off at Lingfield on her debut last month and it’s likely that a replication of that will be enough to see her open her account.

The daughter of Ardad gave Joseph O’Brien’s long odds-on favourite, Teewinot, a real fright at the Surrey track, despite showing signs of greenness at various stages and is sure to have learnt plenty from that experience.

She was judged to have run to a Racing Post Rating of 90 on that occasion and that puts her a long way ahead of today’s seven rivals.

14:58 Goodwood - Roach Powerl @ 7/2

Michael Wigham’s ROACH POWER has enjoyed a profitable campaign, winning twice in July and running several other good races either side, yet remains a well handicapped horse judged on last month’s Newbury third.

The six-year-old won three times for former trainer Tim Easterby and has been clawing his way back to something like his very best for new connections this year, albeit still some way off his peak rating of 83.

Successful off 54 and 59 this summer, he ran a big race off his current mark of 69 at Newbury last time out, doing comfortably the best of those to have raced prominently. He was keener than ideal early on there, too, so there’s reason to mark that effort up further.

15:33 Goodwood - Goodwood Mogul @ 6/4

Marcus Tregoning has very limited ammunition these days, but the Derby winning trainer looks set to saddle a welcome winner courtesy of GOODWOOD MOGUL in this 1m2f novice event.

The selection has been handed an official mark of 85 after three outings, that figure based heavily around July’s narrow Pontefract defeat, when he ran to a much-improved Racing Post Rating of 89.

That rating gives him the edge in this field, whilst the booking of William Buick for the first time breeds confidence.

15:55 Gowran Park - Star Mind @ 7/2

Gerard O’Leary’s STAR MIND has a bit on at these weights in this claimer, but he produced an eye-catching effort when winning a handicap at Naas last time and may prove up the task.

The four-year-old, who won twice on the artificial surfaces for Jack Jones in Britain, had dropped 10lb in the weights after a string of defeats for this yard and was able to cash in, motoring home from an unpromising position under a hands-and-heels ride from Nicola Burns for a first win on turf.

He’s done all his winning over 7f, but he went close over 1m1f at Leopardstown earlier in the year and will have no excuses over this distance of a mile.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
