Lucky 15 Tips: Al Shaham set for Ripon Trophy lift

With five meetings in Britain accompanied by two from Ireland, there is no shortage of Bank Holiday Monday racing as August nears an end.

Ripon's Two-Year-Old Trophy is the Listed standout race of the day with more than £22k to the winner. Below are my Lucky 15 tips for the August Bank Holiday racing action.

14:45 Epsom – Crimson Spirit @ 7/2

The hat-trick-seeking Bell Shot will be popular for the Mick Appleby team in this Epsom race and he has run well over C&D at this track before, but he's gone up 11lb in the ratings for his wins of late and is swerved.

CRIMSON SPIRIT brought up a hat-trick of his own when scoring over track and trip in good style in July after wins at Salisbury and Brighton. He's never been out of the first three in four runs at Epsom over 7f and 1m½f with two wins, a second and a third.

He was midfield in a hot race at Glorious Goodwood after his Epsom win, but has since gone close at Musselburgh (7f, good) from a 1lb lower mark than this and the Daniel & Claire Kubler inmate is hard to ignore given his course credentials, with Jim Crowley taking over in the saddle.

15:15 Ripon – Al Shaham @ 8/13

The pair that beat Amorim at Newbury (6f, good to form) in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes last month are top talents in the making, that much seems sure. But nonetheless, having been up on the early pace, George Boughey's colt was rather brushed aside.

He faces another good prospect at Ripon in the British Stallion Studs EBF Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy Stakes over 6f in Simon & Ed Crisford's AL SHAHAM.

The Blue Point colt is 2-2 so far, both wins coming at Ripon. He won a novice nine days ago in good style despite being eye-balled on the front end for much of the race by Karl Burke's Pontefract scorer Gold Queen Kindly.

When things got serious, Al Shaham really did pick up and motor clear in the final furlong and he's got the attitude to dominate this contest.

15:25 Southwell – Blue Eclipse @ 18/1

Winner of a maiden over 7f at Chelmsford in January on second start, the Alice Haynes-trained BLUE ECLIPSE has only been seen once since.

He ran below expectations at Kempton over 7f in March on handicap bow but can be forgiven for that run and he's had a break since, suggesting something might have ailed him that day.

The Oasis Dream colt is well-bred and entitled to be better than a mark of 74. He steps up in trip for this race at Southwell and is one with scope for improvement.

16:05 Cartmel – Sea The Clouds @ 5/2

Ben Haslam's Ilikedwayurthinkin has a good Cartmel record and is a major player in the Wicks Group Cavendish Cup Handicap Chase as the season ends at this much-loved Cumbrian venue, but preference is for SEA THE CLOUDS for trainer James Moffatt.

He, too, relishes Cartmel. He won a 2m6f handicap over hurdles at this track last summer and went close again over the same C&D in May.

Most recently, he made a winning debut over fences last month over a 2m1½f trip that would be just about as sharp as he'd like, but did so in willing fashion under former champion Brian Hughes.

He's 6lb higher now but has scope for progress and his stamina for this three-and-a-quarter-mile test is assured.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
