The curragh racecourse

There’s a good mix of racing action on Wednesday, with three Flat cards and two National Hunt fixtures on offer across the five meetings in Britain and Ireland.

Newton Abbot gets us started in the afternoon and Nottingham follows soon after, while the Curragh, Ripon and Nottingham provide the evening entertainment. We have three strong fancies to follow across the day, among them a smart dual-purpose Gavin Cromwell mare that can go all the way at the Curragh.

15:52 Nottingham - Bintshuaa @ 11/4

Race four at Nottingham looks competitive for the grade and there are several unexposed sorts that could be of interest, but it’s David Menuisier’s BINTSHUAA that gets the nod from us.

The daughter of Kodiac finished sixth of 11 at Yarmouth on debut back in August and she was only beaten by four lengths that day, just lacking the pace to challenge over 6f.

Her next two efforts were a little underwhelming and she struggled badly on heavy ground at Windsor on her final start at two.

Changing yards in the summer, she made her handicap and stable debut at Kempton in May, running well to finish third at her first try over a mile.

The switch to handicaps has clearly encouraged some improvement and there should be loads more to come from her. It’s noted that Rossa Ryan has been booked to take the ride.

16:22 Nottingham - Boyfriend @ 11/10

One horse sticks out like a sore thumb in race five on the card, with Richard Hannon’s BOYFRIEND expected to be far too good for his five rivals.

Boyfriend ran an absolute cracker to finish second in a Class 2 race at Newbury last month, being edged by a head that day on his first start for 358 days.

The handicapper has responded with a 3lb rise but he is entitled to improve for the run.

Connections have decided to drop him down a couple of grades now and that could provide the perfect opportunity to earn a second career success.

Boyfriend’s most recent form makes him the one they all have to beat and a similar performance from the Newbury one should be more than enough to get the job done.

19:30 Curragh - Sixandahalf @ 11/4

Gavin Cromwell is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in National Hunt racing but he’s also a very shrewd operator on the Flat and he runs the very adaptable mare SIXANDAHALF at the Curragh.

She bolted up in a maiden hurdle over an extended 2m2f at Fairyhouse in January and was well backed when finishing second by a narrow margin in the Grade 2 Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Also a 94-rated horse on the Flat, she was a comfortable winner of a competitive 1m6f handicap at Newmarket in July. Cromwell’s five-year-old then followed that up with a rock-solid third in the Irish Cesarewitch and could prove hard to beat.
