Horse Racing Tips: Scholar should know too much for Hamilton rivals

There's an equal mix of Flat and Jumps action across the six meetings taking place in the UK and Ireland on Wednesday, with Hamilton first up before they go at Beverley, Newton Abbot, Wexford, Kempton and Cartmel.

Among our horse racing tips is one for trainer Ed Walker, who is flying high after the success of Mgheera at Haydock over the weekend.

14:40 Beverley - Orbaan @ 11/2

The Class 5 handicap over Beverley’s extended seven furlongs looks like one of the stronger betting heats on the card and one that looks capable of outrunning his early price is ORBAAN.

A strongly run race is the key to this veteran, particularly over this distance, and he didn’t get much luck in running at Thirsk last time out.

However, a quick early tempo looks likely in this contest with the likes of Finbar’s Lad, Triggerman and Bell Shot all likely to take each other on for the lead.

Unlike Beverley, Thirsk isn’t the easiest track to make up late ground but Beverley’s stiff finish should see him in a better light and the rain that has arrived early this week should help bring his stamina into play.

He’s surely capable of getting a win on the board from a career-low mark of 73 and he went close at Epsom on his penultimate outing, giving the impression that his turn was near again.

16:30 Hamilton - King's Scholar @ 7/2

There is a lot to like about KING’S SCHOLAR, who steps up to 1m5f after an impressive victory over a furlong shorter at Southwell last time, and could relish the longer distance.

The four-year-old completed the final furlong significantly faster than anything else in the race in that all-weather contest on his last start and was evidently very strong at the finish.

That was his second win in his last three starts and he is a slow-maturing runner, who appears only now to be fulfilling his potential. There could be loads more progress to come.

King’s Scholar will need to improve again to defy topweight following a 4lb rise for his victory, but that looks entirely likely and Clifford Lee is an eye-catching booking for the Ed Walker stable that is having only its seventh runner at Hamilton.

20:52 Kempton - Gooloogong @ 7/2

Trainer George Baker does well with his runners in staying races at Kempton and GOOLOOGONG gave him another winner at the track when successful over course and distance two weeks ago. The five-year-old is up only 2lb for that success and can win again.

Gooloogong was having his first run on the all-weather for nearly a year that day and had previously shown plenty of his best form on sand, including at this track. He was well suited by the return to the surface on that occasion and was off 22lb lower than for his last run on it.

He had Capone, Caprelo and Kingdom Of Stars, who all reoppose, comfortably behind that day and did well to win given that he came from behind some of them in a slowly run race.

He appeared to score with a bit more in hand than the winning margin of a neck suggests and Jack Mitchell, who timed it so well for the win last time, is a positive back in the saddle.
