Horse Racing Tips: Crepe Suzette to get the job done at Salisbury

There are five meetings to look forward to across Britain and Ireland - from Catterick, Fontwell, Salisbury, Sligo and Wolverhampton - on Tuesday.

My horse racing tips from across the cards includes a John & Thady Gosden-trained handicap debutant on a potentially lenient opening mark.

15:00 Salisbury - Sovereign Knight each-way @ 20/1

There are several likely candidates in this 6f handicap and it’s the Lemos De Souza-trained SOVEREIGN KNIGHT who gets the nod. He makes his debut for the yard here and has fallen to an attractive mark, with his last win coming off a 1lb lower rating.

The son of Ten Sovereigns was last seen finishing sixth in a Wolverhampton handicap, but he was only two-and-a-half lengths behind the winner. Having been dropped 1lb by the handicapper since then, a return to winning ways must be on the agenda sooner or later.

That aforementioned most recent success came at Lingfield in December and he probably had more in hand than the winning margin suggests. It’s definitely noteworthy that Tom Marquand has been booked for the ride, as he’s one of the best around at the moment.

Yet to win on turf, Sovereign Knight has only had two starts on turf and managed to finish second at Yarmouth in August. Obviously that’s a very small sample size so it’s far too early to suggest he isn’t a turf horse, but the four-year-old deserves a few chances.

16:30 Salisbury - Crepe Suzette @ 5/4

John & Thady Gosden are in pretty good form recently and their strike-rate of 24 per cent in the last fortnight definitely supports that idea. They’re set to unleash handicap debutant CREPE SUZETTE in Salisbury’s feature race.

This thrice-raced filly made her debut in a Newmarket novice over 7f back in November and the writing was on the wall early on. She got squeezed out after leaving the stalls and was unable to recover, although she would have learnt plenty from the experience.

It was a much improved display when upped to an extended mile at Wolverhampton a couple of weeks later and she kept on eye-catchingly well to take the lead inside the final furlong, although she was collared in the final strides, eventually finishing second.

Getting off the mark at the same track but over a furlong further next time, she still showed signs of greenness before hanging on to score narrowly.

Handicaps could be the making of her and this thoroughly unexposed filly should have plenty of improvement still in the tank.

19:10 Catterick - Highfield Sunshine each-way @ 8/1

Racing up with the pace is often important at Catterick, as it’s hard to come from behind at this infamously sharp track.

HIGHFIELD SUNSHINE has a nice low draw and was up with the pace when finishing second in a course and distance maiden last month.

Far too keen in the early stages, she needs to learn to settle better, but the switch to handicaps may help her to do so.

John & Sean Quinn’s three-year-old has been allotted a mark of 72 and it would be a surprise if there wasn’t more to come from her.
