Sunday Racing Tips: Fine Interview to get the job done at Goodwood

There’s something for everyone on Sunday afternoon with 23 races taking place across Britain and Ireland.

Jump racing from Punchestown and Perth is followed hot on the heels by Flat action from Goodwood. Hamish lines up in one of the feature Listed races at 16:45. 

Among our Sunday fancies at the West Sussex track is a Wathnan runner who is on a recovery mission.

13:50 Goodwood - Fine Interview @ Evens

Hamad Al Jehani’s grey gelding Fine Interview marked himself down as a sprinter to follow when getting his favoured soft ground towards the end of last season and can open his 2025 account in Goodwood’s opener.

He struck over 6f at Pontefract and Doncaster in October and his defeat over a furlong further at Catterick in between was a topic of discussion.

Held up well off the pace by an inexperienced rider in Britain, he made up plenty of ground in the straight and traded at 1.27 in running before failing to reel in the leader.

Our fancy picked up where he left off next time around, recording a personal best and again looking all over the winner when third at Doncaster’s Lincoln meeting.

The ground was lively enough for him at Haydock subsequently and this looks like a second crack at getting him into, or at least giving him a chance of getting into, the Wokingham at Royal Ascot (he'd pick up a 5lb penalty).

He faces just six rivals and sneaks into this 0-90 handicap.

16:10 Goodwood - Spirit Mixer @ 3/1

Most of the runners in the staying handicap have something to prove and there’ll be no hiding place for the trio returning from monster layoffs on easing ground.

Spirit Mixer has an affinity with Chester having gained his last three wins there but a staying-on seventh in the Chester Cup looks to have teed him up for a first win at a different idiosyncratic track.

He has two good runs from two at the West Sussex venue and his ability to travel strongly will stand him in good stead on Sunday afternoon.

Andrew Balding and Jeff Smith’s Frankel gelding had a triple-figure BHA rating at one point and is nicely treated off just 1lb higher than his last success.

17:20 Goodwood - Nariko @ 5/2

Oisin Murphy could be in for a profitable day and his mount in the finale makes much the most appeal.

Like Fine Interview in the opener, Nariko relished getting her toe in at three and was a nose away from landing a slow-ground hat-trick under the champion jockey when last seen in October.

That effort strongly suggests connections have yet to get to the bottom of her and she’s fancied to rise through the grades this season, especially as moving up to 7f could unlock a bit more.

Two of her half-siblings won at the trip and she’s been strong at the finish when sent sprinting of late.

The question mark is whether she’ll be sharp enough returning from over seven months off but Hugo Palmer seems to have his string well forward - he’s 6-24 with his juveniles this year for example.
