Horse Racing Tips: Gosden’s Guineas hope can do the business

Ascot racecourse 2

Haydock and Kempton host the two premier raceday meetings of a busy Saturday, with the Group 1 Haydock Park Sprint Cup the feature of a strong eight-race card from the Merseyside track, whilst the Group 3 September Stakes and Sirenia Stakes are the highlights from the Sunbury venue.

There are some strong supporting cards from Ascot, Thirsk and Navan, while the action goes deep into the evening courtesy of Stratford’s twilight National Hunt fixture and a bumper eight-race all-weather card under the lights at Wolverhampton. Amongst Saturday's Horse Racing Tips is a John and Thady Gosden-trained colt, who has looked a potential star in the making in his two outings so far.

13:35 Kempton - Kalpana @ 4/9

It’s been a slightly frustrating campaign for Andrew Balding’s KALPANA, who has been unable to add to last year’s five victories, but the four-year-old filly has been running to a high level in defeat in top-class races, and the Group 3 September Stakes represents by far her easiest opportunity for some time.

She’s the highest rated in the field (122) and is fully deserving of that figure, having finished an excellent third behind Los Angeles in the 1m2f Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on her reappearance, prior to chasing home the brilliant Whirl (won impressively since) in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the same track at the end of June.

Even better back up to 1m4f behind Calandagan in the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last time, Kalpana is a clear form standout, eased in grade and has already shown her liking for this track, having landed this race last season en route to her win at Ascot on Champions Day.

John and Thady Gosden’s PUBLISH would have won decisively on his debut at Sandown at the beginning of July but for meeting repeated traffic problems in the final 2f, and he deservedly gained compensation over the same course and distance later that month.

The son of Kingman was more workmanlike than impressive when justifying odds of 4/7 over 7f at the Esher track 44 days ago, but there’s no doubting his potential, and he already holds a prominent position in the betting for next season’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, currently 16/1 joint-second best in the ante-post market behind Aidan O’Brien’s Albert Einstein.

He’d have been a strong favourite in the Group 3 Solario Stakes at Sandown last weekend, but was forced to miss that race on account of the testing surface.

Underfoot conditions should be fine for the colt at Haydock, a stiff drying wind likely to ensure something like good ground, and there’s reason to believe he can take a big step forward now that he tackles a mile for the first time.

14:40 Ascot - Native Warrior @ 5/1

There are very few jockeys who ride Ascot’s straight track better than Jamie Spencer, and I'm expecting him to get a good tune out of Karl Burke’s NATIVE WARRIOR in the ultra competitive Schweppes Handicap over 7f.

The four-year-old, who finished third in last season’s Britannia at Royal Ascot, has looked better than ever this season following a gelding operation and addition of a visor, coming home from the rear to score over at Newcastle in June before running to a career-best Racing Post Rating of 103 when third in a hot handicap at Glorious Goodwood.

He runs off the same mark of 95 and should have his optimum conditions underfoot.
