Horse Racing Tips: Two fancies for Saturday

Chester racecourse

It’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day at Ascot on Saturday, the prestigious Group 1 over 1m 4f the highlight a star-studded eight-race card from the Berkshire track. York is the scene of the other Premier Raceday fixture, the feature Group 2 York Stakes being accompanied by some quality handicaps.

Chester and Newcastle host some competitive afternoon action of their own alongside Gowran Park in Ireland, prior to Salisbury and Windsor taking over in the evening. Amongst our Saturday’s fancies is the Marcus Tregoning-trained Twilight Moon, who looks on a good mark and is open to improvement over a new distance.

16:20 Chester - Acrisius @ 11/2

The Michael and David Easterby-trained ACRISIUS has yet to add to last season’s Brighton maiden win, but he ran well in the 3YO Dash at Epsom last month and backed that up with a solid third over course and distance.

The son of Ardad showed gradual improvement as a juvenile and looked better than ever on his seasonal return at Doncaster in April when beaten a short-head off a mark of 73.

He wasn’t able to kick on from that as his connections would have hoped, but he’s now down to 71 and is weighted to turn the tables on Maharajas Express from their meeting here a fortnight ago, the selection 5lb better off for his length-and-a-half defeat.

20:00 Salisbury - Twilight Moon @ 11/4

Marcus Tregoning’s TWILIGHT MOON wasn’t at her best at Windsor last time, reported to have run flat by Kieran Shoemark when beaten over five lengths on her first try beyond 1m2f.

However, her previous performances read well and she’s surely on a mark that she can win off.

The daughter of Adaay showed steadily progressive form last season, twice finishing runner-up in maidens at Brighton over 7f and a mile with ease underfoot.

She’s continued on an upward curve over middle distances on faster ground this year, twice running well behind Jack Channon’s highly progressive Pomme Pomme when she performed to Racing Post Ratings well in excess of her official mark of 64.

Out of a 2m winner, this trip ought to suit and she’ll likely appreciate a return to an undulating track.
